well, as a newfound hobby i like to take apart old busted pc's and rebuild them from spare parts. I got this hard drive ... , its 1 gig, and ussually when i stick slave drives in my computer (486 win 3.1), since i have slave drive feature n auto, t will automatically start dos from my c: and i can view the slave drive. This time, it just said 'no boot device'. So i stick the ms-dos floppy disk in and it loads, but fails to load either of my drives exept a: (floppy 3 1/2). Well, i then stuck in the new drive in as the master HD, and it says the same error. Although this time, when i stick in the dos 6.22 disk, it lets me to the c: prompt. So i format the hard drive, and then try to install dos to it... but when i go into dos setup, it agin does not recognizemy hard drive. All that i want to be able to do is make this drive my slave drive .. Is the drive messed up or am i doong something wrong? Please help me!

Sometimes, I've found that different brands of hard drives will not work together as master and slave. If your slave drive will work all by itself as a master, then I'd say you simply have incompatible drives that will not work together. If your slave drive doesn't work properly by itself, then I'd say the drive has a problem.

matt, check to see if your drive(s) have a jumper setting, to set each as a master, slave, or "cable select". quantum & seagate are 2 drives that have excellent website tech support, where you can look up your drive's specifications, and it will tell you the jumpers settings as well. i'm sure other drive manufacturers offer the same support.
