Guess what Windows 3.1 users! I used to use Windows 3.1 over all of the other OS's because I loved the GUI Interface. Now that I have Windows XP, there is this program called WindowsBlinds (www.windowsblinds.net)download the 3.5 version. There is this function that enables you to make Windows XP look EXACTLY like Windows 3.1!!! This means dialogue boxes, buttons, menu's and all!!!! Everything! So get it! Got it? Good!

WindowBlinds is up to version 4.1 now. I like the mozilla theme myself, but the Longhorn one is not bad.

Actually, now that the 3d look is so all-pervasive,i'm finding more and more that i find the clean 2d look of w31 very refreshing...
although my w31 is all 'gussied up' with mask and calmira, etc, i still can get it from my nt351 os...(when i'm not running newshell)
nt31 actually looks even cleaner tho, in my opinion..

FWIW My favourite looking MS os/shell has to be W3.0 dead simple and clean looking. I liked dosshell also especially on very slow systems
Woof

i don't much care for the 3.1 look i, i perfer the 9x look thats why i had mask on my old 3.1 setup but now i rather like the xp look, and i have had trouble using winblinds, it acts slow and jerky even on a 1.80mhz processor with 256mb of ram and a 30gb hdd

Interesting statement kev87.I find it kind of ironic.Win 3.1 is known for its speed simplisity and stability and people have worked to give it a modern apperance without sacrificing that. Now someone has takin one of the most bloated but modern os and trying to make it look just like win 3.1
Something about that just makes me laugh.

Wolfe just took the words right out of my mouth :) And to add more insult to injury, there is a frequenter of this website who has designed a windows-xp theme for windows 3.1 & calmira. LOL.
Ya talk about going from one extreme to the other!

I find it funny that it takes microsoft well over 64MB of ram and over 500MHZ of CPU power to create the windows XP look and feel
yet its reproduced in windows 3.1 needing under 50mhz CPU and under 8 meg ram
:D

Thanks Rachel - coincidentally I was asking one of my mates a few days ago if he could get my new system to look like 3.1
The irony is definitely there though *g*

Some thing i forgot to add in my earlier post is that not only is someone trying to make Win XP look like Win 3.1 but by doing it they are adding even more code bloat to and already resorce hogging OS making it posibly more unstablble and definatly going completly opposite direction of the spirit of Win 3.1.

yes it does seem a bit rediculuos to go and write these programs to make xp even more resorce hungry then before i'd just assume stick 3.1 on my new system and go from there but what about windows 9x? every one wants to make 3.1 look like xp or xp like 3.1 or 3.1 like 9x but what making 9x look like xp or 3.1, as 3.1 has tought us, a simple little utility such as mask98 can remarkably make 3.1 look just like 9x especialy with calmira, i actually got confused one day thought i was in windows 95 but i was only using 3.1! my piont is to use that same technoligy used to create mask98 to make something to give xp a 3.1 without bloating the resorces or give 3.1 an xp look without bloating and something to work on 9x too, i know this is what winblinds is supposed to do and its supposed to work on 9x as well but it is far from simplistic!

As for making Windows XP more resource hungry, according to what I was reading, WindowsBlinds does it's theming differently from how XP does it, so using a WindowBlinds theme should actually use less resources that XP's default blue theme. (while WB skins more things than XP by default)

Well...no wonder, if you have a 1.8 mhz processor. How'd you ever get 256 mb ram in that thing? lol j/k src="http://64.246.0.3/boardimages/grin.gif">

Oh Lord, I just realized how extreme I've gone with this customization.
My 3.11 system looks like W95
My Linux Machine looks like every OS ever made.
My Win98 Machine looks like KDE
And...
My WinXP Laptop looks like a wicked Brush Metal skinned MacOSX, with a cool aquatic background and 3D fish, swimming around my desktop, for Icons.Maybe I'll hunt down a GUI cartridge for my C64 next!

OI know what ypou mean, my 2 98 systems are pretty standard looking apart from themes, but my laptop runs Norton Desktop, The PC emulator on the amiga runs Calmira and the Amiga is set up to look like 98 c/w start menu etc and a systray
Woof

lol. whoevr's got that 1.80MHz processor, ur a tit i think u mean 1,80GHz. y not just use win3.1 instead of skinning xp?
seems daft 2 me. forget windows, go 2 linux and stop being fanies man

huh? did i type 1.80mhz?! who on earth has a 1 mhz processor running windows!? its a p4 1.80ghz with 256mb of ram running scum of the earth xp!

Hehehe...I know all about XP and it being a resource hog. Was going to upgrade my RAM, then did some experimenting...went into the display area and told XP to configure for performance rather than having the OS set my graphics. Now my XP is much cleaner, more like 3.1 and I no longer need to upgrade the RAM. My computer runs much faster without all the graphics crap that XP wants to load.
I did put Calmira XP on my 3.1 laptop, but it's still 3.1, clean and simple!
BTW, I read somewhere that the combination of DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1 is the most stable OS/GUI of all time. Makes senses to me.
Take care,
Julie

Why, when you can download Contiki from dunkels.com/adam/contiki? (Build your own TFE, and get online, too!)
