getting laptop to boot up automatic

Wise ones, I have and OLD laptop on 3.1, when I turn it on it stays in the c-prompt. I can type:
cd windows
and then win
..this will start windows, but, it is not as it was before. there are no icons on the desktop and the only way I can find files is to use 'program manager' i think. this is the only thing that appears.

"edit" may not be in the root directory, but is likely in the "path", therefore instead of "c:\edit autoexec.bat", enter "edit c:\autoexec.bat" (this may have been kkk's intention).
"the only way I can find files is to use 'program manager'" How did you manage your groups and apps if not by using the program manager? The groups shall have icons (programs).
