hi !
I would like to change the resolution of the display from 640 to 800 or 1024x768 (if my video card allow me the higher resolution)
i use win3.1 and dos6.2. Is there anyway to do it with the control pannel, like for win95 ? or should i use another program, if yes is anybody has it ?
thks
fred

In Win3.xx, this is done with "Main" group/ "Windows Setup"/ change video driver. You need a driver for your card that supports the desired resolution (if the card supports it first, of course). Usually, a video driver disk for Win3.xx contains a set of drivers for different resolutions, so you may have it already (already present in the drop-down list).

i think my problem is simular
i have a older computer with a 486
it only has win 3.1
i keep trying to get vga 256 but it time it askd me for win 3.1 disks which i didnt have
so i had someone make me copys of it but for some reason they arent excepted. it says something about overwrite protection
i assumed that meant because the disk were not the originals it wont work
is that true? what can i try next? my young daughter has a lot of games and they won't work with having 256 colors i have looked all over for free downloads to get this and not sure what i am doing the front screen says american megatrends, inc ambios
i even went to that site to look around not sure what to do i just spent alot of money to fix this computer for her but would also like the 256 colors . if anyone could help i would appreciate it

thks for the follow up...
So i used a driver which was deliver with my PC it is a windows graphic accelerator disc.
As a result of the installation my system crashed... This story happend also to one of my friend with his own disc. We never tried again. Nevertheless i can try to see if i can use another driver. For judy
Try another copy of win 3.1, maybe one of the disc had some corrupted sectors.
The problem can also come from your video card, you have to be sure it is a VGA graphic card. (you didn't give much detail on your 486)
you can also use a soft from scitech call scitech display doctor ask for the trial version (sdd53a (ask them to send you the trial version and try it)or sdd653 (this one is for dos 6.22 or win 95, it can be downloaded from scitech site)). But don't buy it unless nothing else has worked.

I am suffering from Judy's problem for my kids and am getting the message that the system is looking for VDDTVGA.386 to copy. I don't know what this is. I have already downloaded a driver from Trident. My Utility diskette says that it is a Trident8900CL VGA.
Do you have any direction for me or further information in this regard. I'd really appreciate the help!

randy:
I just went through this.
i will be as brief as possible.as you move to higher resolution say
800x600 you need more memory on the video card.then as you move from 16 colors to 256 colors
to 65k colors to 16mill colors you need much more memory on the video cardmany trident cards came out with 256k or 512k
for memory. some have 1 mg but they are rare.for me to get 256 color at 800x600 res i had
to find a trident 8900 with 1 mg of memory.so the firs step is identify your video card manufacturer, then the model of chip that is on it, then the memory on board
most ISA or older 486 video cards had 256k
memory chips as pairs.so 2 chips = 256k memory
4 chips = 512k memory
8 chips = 1mg memorythe more colors and the higher resolutions
require more memory the create the video page
before it gets displayed on your monitor.for this reason i removed a trident 9000 because it only had 512k memory with no way to increase it, and that would not give me the 256 colors at 800x600 which works best for the net.
i hope this is of help.
once you know what you own size wise then you look for the driver that gives you that.
in trident there seems like there is a different driver for each resolution and number of colors combination.
so find out if the card can get the resolution and colors you want before you change you driver, if you change to a high resolution or high color driver and your video card does not have the memory the computer will likely lock up on you.
if i can be of any more help e-mail me directly as i don't visit this site often

I believe I'm having either the same problem or one of a similar nature. I'm running a Packard Bell Enhanced 386 with Windows For Workgroups.
I would like to switch to 256 colors as well. I also, however, am asked for the windows diskettes which I don't have. I'm not even sure which video card I have. HELP!
