My wife was given a laptop a 386-25. I convinced her to let me reformat the hard drive doing a format/s to preserve the system info. I loaded DOS 6.22, and began the Windows 3.1 setup. After 3 disks had loaded, I got the message "could not load GDI.exe file". I have tried to reload several times. The outcome is always the same. Is there a work-around? Or is there a source for OEM diskettes for the windows 3.1 operating system?

I had the same problem trying to install Win 3.11, Win95, and Win 98 on a home built machine with an AMD 5x86 P75 133mhz. After long hours of trial and error, I stumbled accoss the cause. Two of my 8mb Simms were EDO. The Motherboard was pre EDO era. This may not answer your question it may point you in the right direction.

GDI can be caused by a bad font BDdenver incompatibility with the HP 932C

Delete the BDdenver fontand reboot.
