Ok I have worked for a long time on this one.

Hereīs how you can download (allmost all of) Windows for FREE!
With some additional help we will have a completely free Windows soon........

Hereīs the URL:

http://www.openwindows.tk

and if that doesnīt work:

http://openwindows.webhop.net

Donīt remove this post because itīs absolutely legitimate and maybe it will even encourage Microsoft to release Windows 3.1x to the public domain......

Looking interesting... Would be pretty nice if you actually wind up with a completely free Win 3.1 clone... But I thought you were planning to have Calmira as the shell? Or was I mixing that up with something else?

I wish that they could make this post a sticky so people will be able to see this topic regardless of the visitiation date, so people would not spam this board for MS warez.

I have looked at
http://openwindows.webhop.net
and think this is as more Microsoft content than you think or lead people to beleave!

"After installing you will have a GUI that is identical to Windows 3.1 from Microsoft, only this one has newer files!"

Thats becouse as well as the 11 named files he says are needed from Windows 3.1 Take a look at the 15 downloads, which almost all contain Microsoft source files as well! No wonder it looks like Windows 3.1 - It is Windows 3.1

Most Microsoft downloads state they are copyright, and only to be used to update a licenced copy of Windows.

Yes I know I offer many of these 'Service Packs' (Microsoft had not yet named them as such) but I do not imply that it is part of a Do It Yourself Windows 3.1 Kit!

Interesting project however!

I have made some little corrections to my page (I forgot SVGA.EXE) and the dot.tk URL is now working.

Can anyone here help me with some more replacements?

I think MMSYSTEM.DLL resides in some other software packages too and I am going to test some replacements I found for REGEDIT.exe soon.

To PC-Freak:
Of course Calmira can be used, but I guess it only replaces PROGMAN.exe and WINFILE.EXE, so its not really neccesary for this project.
To K_Semler: Thanks for the positive comment!
To Mick C: Are you working for MS or what? .-) BTW. Your site with its downloads was on of the inspirations for this project!

The reason I brought it up was because Calmira could serve as free replacements for Micro$oft's PROGMAN.exe and WINFILE.exe. (unless you happened to find non-MS versions?)

Either way, good luck with this project!

The site is not finished yet (its just at the beginning!).

Soon I will make a section where recommended updates/replacements will be mentioned.
Examples for this are: Winbar, Calmira and other shell replacements, but also the updated Calculator, Win32s, Notebook replacements, alternative free wordprocessors (Write replacement) and even a Taskmanager replacement.

Until now I only have mentioned a minimum set of required files.

Check the site for updates!

I make no excuses for my above post. No I do not work for Micro$oft, I was burned by them myself 2 years ago for hosting MS-DOS & Windows 3x. MS have no interest whatsoever in making older versions Freeware or anything else for that matter! All they want people to do is buy the latest Bugged BETA version from them. All I am saying is be very carfull what you say and claim on your site!

Alternative Shells & Skins such as Calmira have done a lot to keep Win3x alive, Promote them instead of PROGMAN or WINFILE as your shell, and you will get my support.

I am waiting for the day Microsoft reacts on my site! I challenge them to do so! It would mean good publicity for me! :-)

Best of luck to you! Microsoft normally lean on your ISP first, not you directly!
A lot of ISP's then just cut the user off!
Sometimes with no warning...
Hope this does not happon to you :-(

Humm sounds like a good idea i dont know why no one has made a free windows 3.1 clone already ?

i checked the site http://openwindows.webhop.net

"One of the advantages is that it can run on top of (free) DOS Operating Systems like OpenDOS or FreeDOS"

I cant speak for openDos but freedos sadly is not capable of running windows 3x (16-bit) (becuase of ram managment i think ? )

however i read on there that windows 3x (8-bit) version loads and crashes after 5 seconds or something like that, could have been windows 3.0

feel free to correct me if im wrong also dose anyone know if win3x will run on opendos ?

Good luck with your project hope it turns out well

"Please help me to replace the 11 files that are still needed from the original Windows 3.1.
I hereby ask Microsoft to release these 11 files to the public domain."

Getting MS to release the source for educational perposes would be a lot better than just making files free because you cant realy fix bugs or improve compiled files without source

if you can program it may also be good to lend a little of the wine source code I had program manager running fine in linux with wine :)

Good luck

For getting a replacement for REGEDIT.EXE, I would suggest going to Calmira's Site and clicking on the downloads section. Ther you will see a replacement registry editor that appears as the Windows 9x/NT4 one does. It says it is beta software, but I have used it, and I would consider it as a stable biuld as it has never screwed up on me.

Here is the direct download link to the freeware registry editor. I actually find it more capable than the stock one supplied with Win311FW. It is very good. in design, and performance.

For the Notepad replacement, I reccomend Notepads+, it is like notepad with a biult in spell checker, and a toolbar. It is a very good program with no limit on rile opening size.

Here is the free Calculator update that fixes suptraction errors. Here is the latest version of Win32s. This is version 1.30.172.

I do hope that this project becomes successful, is there any other files that you are looking for replacements?

"do you plan to make a windows 95 clone?"

I know it was not a question for me but im going to try respond anyway :)

i dont know if hes planning a windows 95 clone but it would be hard but if you are looking for a way to run windows programs without windows continue reading..

There is a beta called ReactOS planning to clone windows NT4 / NT5 (2k) but its still earley alpha and it will use nt4 drivers programs ect....

you could get linux installed and install wine (still alpha) it will not run a lot of windows games but it will run a lot of windows9x /nt programs but you are limited to using linux drivers

both worth checking out

Thanks for the tips k_semler, especially the one for REGEDIT replacement. The other files that need to be replaced are firstly the remaining 10 original files needed.

I have not (used) much programming skills (as you can read on the site), so I donīt even dare to think about a 95 replacement yet!;-)

To Play3r:

You did a good suggestion about releasing the source of Windows and about the source of the Wine project.
I already did a post about this last subject here:

http://www.computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/10624.html

Does anyone know where to get the Wine source for (lets say) PROGMAN and how to compile it for DOS/16bit Windows?
As you can see in the post about EOSLX I only have tried versions already compiled....

sorry if i confused you there Soedesh i meant i was running microsofts progman.exe in linux not that wine has its own version of progman

But wine dose have the ability to run windows 3.1 programs so it has some windows 3.1 clone code in it

you can get the source at www.winehq.org

I do have a question of my own are there are free windows 16 bit compilers ?

I dont think GCC supports windows 3.1

Frankly,i dont have any prob with win31, i dont think MS even really got into really (in my opinion :) objectionable practices until near the win95 era,and didnt rig their software (in my opinion, again) till even later.
Frankly, what 31 *really* needs is something absolutely everyone seems to be overlooking, and thats some kind of patch or rewrite to overcome the very low system resources limit.
period.

your really into this, eh, soedesh...i can relate, i suppose..only an echte nederlander would just keep pressing along despite the obstacles :)
Thing is, you know what windows is? It's the kernel. If you dont replace that, you've still got MSwindows.Period.

I think the kernel is the file called WIN386.exe and I also think this will be the biggest obstacle to replace!

I hope some good programmers will focus on replacing (only) this kernel now.......
