Can anybody out there tell me if there is free internet access for Windows 3.1? I checked out all the free internet access providers (alta vista etc.,) but they have free internet access only for Windows 95 or higher???

My internet provider said they will not allow windows 3.11 on thier system as of sept 1999 and I pay 25 dollars a month for my service. The do not want any problems with the year 2000. I have win95 and find that it is better but you do need to upgrade if you want it two work fast.

I have successfully used freeweb with windows 3.1, but do NOT download their browser and config files. You must sign up for a password online, then read the instructions carefully and configure it yourself.

Jim,

I looked at FreeWeb, they want your credit card number (for proof of age they say). Since when are we using credit cards for proof of age. This looks a little funky to me.

Yeah, it does look kind of funky....
I don't believe it is for "proof of age" either.
There really is no "proof of age" on the net. What's to stop a child from "borrowing" their parent's credit card?
On the other hand, it does keep people from making a bunch of fake accounts, etc.
Who knows what their real intentions are, but
I have yet to see any strange charges on my card.
But I have used it with windows 3.1 and trumpet winsock, and it works.

Go check out http://www.metconnect.com
it may work if you have a 486 PC
or a pentium processor I made http://www.netzero.network on a 486 PC running win 95 as a upgrade we put 2x
16mg Ram and it is running witha old
Packard Bell fixed , on board vid card
that limits it to 256 colors so it blinks whenever one makes any change in screen
image . That is the clostest to " Win 3.10" and free ISP I have seen .
Some one said they had retrofixed a 486
PC with 128 meg of ram and win 3.10 runs with out crashing !!

There is a Software That clames to convert
3.10 to " Win 95 " I think thy are there own Isp & and Browser and there is free software that makes a PC run like it was
Win 95??? check it out at >this >>.http://www.NEWDEALINC.COM/ >> >

Freewwweb is now free and no longer requires a credit card from what I have heard. I was told that you can now enter 4444 3333 2222 1111 and exp. date 01/01 and it will work. But like somebody else said, do not download the software from there. Go to www.calmira.org and use the links to go to Netscape 3.0 for Win3.x (with dialer) and download the files from there. It will work perfectly with Windows 3.1. I haven't tried it with Freewwweb, but I know the guy who has the webpage from a mailing list and he says it works perfectly. I have used the software with my reg. ISP and it works.

As long as you are at calmira.org, check out the program. It is really great and free. I use it on my computer and love it.

Jeremy,

as far as I know you can get free access
just by using Freewwweb. I don't know about
downloading the software, so maybe you should
try sticking to going to a site like

www.freewwway.com,

or even better, use a search engine (I use
"google.com" - a favorite) and find the sites that you can go to register.

(i.e. go to www.google.com, type FREEWWWEB
REGISTER or something similar, go to the site
that sounds good - I just went to this:

www.autoreg.freewwweb.com; seemed to be okay although I had problems using other ISP's.)

With autoreg.freewwweb.com, you register
(they don't ask for credit cards, but DO
need an address, phone number; they also say
you can sign up more than one account; because they only give 80 hours but I'm
getting ahead of myself)

and I would think it works for Windows 3.1.
First, once you have given them information,
you write down/save your user ID/password,
then for Windows 3.1:

if you're using Netscape, (3.04)

you will either have to find a dialer config you can use with Netscape Navigator 3.04 or
Internet Explorer 3,

(which means searching for a bit with either
Google or another search engine; in this
case, now you have to find out how to config
a "Freewwweb dialer" without needing all the
stuff for Windows 95, like Dial-Up Networking etc.)

this shouldn't take long; BUT, I will warn
you that I do NOT yet know how long
Freewwweb takes to load (couldn't say, since
I'm using Windows 95; that is, not for 3.1
anyway) but will say you should have LESS
problems with 3.1 than 95.

(believe it or not)

Once you can figure out how to connect to
Freewwweb (like I said just look for a bit
on the Web with some search engines, soon
you should find something that says how to
connect to their service using 3.1)

all you have to do is make Freewwweb your
home page; in Netscape,

1. Go to Options.
2. Click on General Preferences.
3. Go to "Startup Launch" / Netscape.
4. Where it says, "Browser starts with"

home-page: home.freewwweb.com.

5. Click on OK.

This sets up Freewwweb as your home page;
by the way, if I were you, stick to 3.1 and
don't upgrade to 95 unless it's really
necessary. All I've found since switching is
far more "IPF" (Internal Page Faults),
GPF's (General Protection Faults) and alot
more bugs than when I stuck with 3.1

I've found, too: for anyone else, who wants
a "Free ISP", Alta-Vista is REALLY slow;

if you're running at LEAST a Pentium 133
with 32 MB Ram, I still feel it will run a
bit slow; (yeah on a 486 DX2-66 it runs very
slow; if it's so much better on a Pentium,
then it's because Internet Explorer 4 isn't
being used as the browser.)

Hope I was of some help.

Alan.

Thank you, everyone for the great advice. I have been trying to get my daughter's old dinosaur, win 3.1 online for MONTHS! without any success. I have tried the Trumpet Winsock program, but when I try to log on, it just doesnt work. And my ISP "Tech" people have been LESS than helpful about the whole matter. I am going to try out some of the suggestions here, in hopes something will work. I will let you know what I find out.

Thanks,

Me again. First of all, yes the freeWWWeb free internet DOES WORK!..yahoo! However, one of the biggest problems I was having with darn computer was, I bought it used, and it didnt even have a web browser! Kind of hard to get on the internet and do anything without a browser, even connect to the internet, and FORGET the TRUMPET WINSOCK!..GAWD!
SOOOO I took it upon myself, to find a browser that I could possibly put onto floppy disk (since that is all the darn thing has on it) And, I found one, but it was much too large a file to put on floppy. SO, since I have a windows 98 computer of my own, I downloaded the browser, and unzipped it, and broke it down into disk size folders, which I will be putting on the internet soon, to make getting connected to the internet SOO MUCH easier for people like myself!..lol So, thank you for the tips about FreeWWWeb, and I shall be back to post my site for downloading that lifesaving browser!

Thanks again,
Dina =0)

Okay for all who are happy with Windows 3.1 (such as myself). For a short while you can try www.worldshare.com. However, they too are going to make the irritating switch from surveys to ad banners (requiring Win 95 and up). I too was very disappointed when freewwweb went bankrupt. That ISP was smooth sailing on my old, but very reliable PC. Now that worldshare is going to require win 9X very soon. I am searching for new free ISPs that is compatible with my system. I'll keep you all posted.

I've just checked out Dialfree - they've gone belly-up too and now worldshare is picking up the slack. Worldshare is NOT free but it does allow a user of Win 3.1 or Linux or most anything else that can use PPP to connect to the internet and still at a relatively low cost. Here's the link for thier configuration page showing all the OS's you can use and the info for any others.
