Wiped out 3.1 on 486. Have new W95 w/boot disk, but it can't find CDRom. Drivers that come w/disk don't work. HELP!

Tracy,

To learn how to make a boot disk with your CD-ROM drivers go to;

www.bootdisk.com

Follow the links for Win 95 and you should be able to fire up your CD-ROM.

You can also re-install dos 5.x or 6.x
after you have done this -
install the cd-rom drivers disk that came with your cd-rom...
this will give access to your CD-Rom to install windows...
MY ADVICE :
depending which versions of Win95 you are installing - there are 3-6 versions depending upon who you talk too...
Before installing make a directory
c:\md win95
c:\cd win95
then go to which ever drive is setup for your CD-Rom
eg.
C:\d:
d:\cd win95
d:\win95\copy *.* c:\win95

This will copy all the setup files to your hard drive...
this is if you have enough hard drive space to do this of course...
WHY i hear you ask...
Some versions of Win95 will start to install fine util they go to the first reboot - then for whatever reason - on the reboot it does not install the CD-Rom drivers...
consequently - you cannot finish installing the programme because you cannot access the CD-Rom -
however this way you just redirect the setup to look in
c:\win95
where it will find the files
PLEASE NOTE - DO NOT DO AN INSTALL FROM THE HARD DRIVE - IT WILL NOT LOAD THE CD-ROM DRIVERS AT ALL IN SOME CASES - BECAUSE IT DOES NOT KNOW TO LOOK FOR THEM !

You could also try using win98 setup disk it has a better selection of cdrom drivers. You will have to change to the cdrom drive and type "setup"(d:\setup) when the message "cannot find win98 setup files" This works well, but please note, "win98 emergency boot disk" will not work because it creates a ram drive to install the cdrom into and when it reboots it looses the ram drive. Good Luck
