Error Message: Cannot Copy File: File System Error (1026)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 95
Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows 98

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you download a file and you click Save This Program To Disk in the File Download dialog box, you may receive the following error message:

Error Copying File: Cannot copy file: File system error (1026)

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you do not have enough disk space on the drive that contains the Temporary Internet Files folder.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods:

Delete unnecessary files on the drive containing the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Delete files in the Temporary Internet Files folder. To do so in Internet Explorer 4, click Internet Options on the View menu in Internet Explorer, click Delete Files on the General tab, and then click OK. To do so in Internet Explorer 5, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, click Delete Files on the General tab, and then click OK.

Move the Temporary Internet Files folder to a drive that has more free space. For information about how to move the Temporary Internet Files folder, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q172949 How to Change the Location of Temporary Internet Files

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION
Files that you download are first stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder, and then moved to the destination folder.

Note that this error message can also appear if the server has problems sending the file because of security issues or network traffic. In this case, the file is never created in the cache because of the bad transfer.

I have the same problem.
I have removed an application with ICONs
left on the Desktop. Another application
with short cuts left under Recycle Bin.
Trying to remove these short cuts generates
Delete File System error 1026.
I am going to try to use scandisk utility
and see if that will help to remove these files.

I have a couple of files on my desktop like this that I can't remove. The properties section of the file says that it is 0 in size, yet I can't remove it. I've tried the stuff in the microsoft support on this code but it doesn't work.

Time and again files names in one of my folders chage to some funny characters. When I try to delete the folder. It gives me error "Cannot Delete file: File system error(1026)" Apart from that, the file size shown is of the order of 60GB which is impossible on a 4GB H/D of my laptop.

Any Sherlock Holmes out there who can get the bug out ? Or isit some new virus...
[System: Windows 98]
