FA311 and WFW3.11 don't play nice

I want to net a P4/XP machine with a Dell 133MHz P1. Two Netgear FA311 NICs on a cross-over cable talk to each other OK using NG's test program, but WFW3.11 can not successfully install the necessary drivers - can't find files I know are present. My opinion of Netgear "support" is unprintable. Any one out there ever have and fix this problem?
