I have a compaq presario 425 the all in one piece model monitor and hard drive all together. I need to make it ethernet compatible- doesn't have a pci slot-- I read something about MCA slots???? help my daughter is going to college we saved it all these years

dad, geez , send the girl off with a decent computer.
that dinasour won't run with todays high speed servers. not enough memory, not enough cpu, etc. not being ugly, just truthful. you won't be doing her any favors.

cookson, ok

Your only solution is an ISA ethernet card if you have an ISA expansion slot.
Otherwise look on EBay or similar for an "Ethernet to Parallel" Connector, mostly made by DLink I think.
btw MCA slots were only on IBM PS/2 and as rare as rocking horse dung.

why are you so negative and unhelpful to people?...the person asked for a solution to get ethernet working on the pc he/her already has...he/she did not, however, ask your (or anyone elses) opinion on whether they need a new computer
to sstraw: x86's suggestions are a good bet to go by...i would try them before you worry about getting a new pc

to each his own. that post of mine was positive. those of us who repair/install computers alll day everyday, know what will work in todays environment. a 386 can't cut in a college [study on line ] enviornment. any money spent on old technology is money well spent on newer equipment that can be used. granted, some folks can't don't want to spend money on newer equipment. but in the long run, it pays.
notice now, i didn't interfere with your posts. i respect other folks opinions greatly, and allow them to their own opinion.
good luck

There are Ethernet adapters for MCA slots. I had one on my IBM PS/2, 386SX-16, at work, a few years back. Unfortunately, getting one may cost a hefty sum for a network card, as almost all MCA cards were expensive. It seems as if we could get one for a little over a hundred dollars about 3 years back. Plus, these cards had a coax connector and needed an adapter to work with 10BaseT. I agree that it's probably not worth the effort/money. If I were you, I'd look into x86's parallel solution. I've used a parallel cable in Linux as a networking solution (PLIP), and it was quite usable.
Please contact the network administator as I don't want you to waste your time/money if your solution is inadequate for your daughter's needs (and compatibilites) at school. Good luck.

To clarify what I was mentioning, I have a RJ45/BNC Ethrnet to Parallel port connector DLink DE-620CT, it can be powered from an power supply or the keyboard port. It sits on a standard parallel port and even on a 386 PC will take a Broadband Lan connection with speeds as good as if not better than a 56K dial-up modem.
sstraw if your PC does what you want, € 20 is a small cost compared to another PC.

x86 has a solution here at a give away price.
Don, we're not just tossing money at a problem. We just don't think this machine will do what it needs to do for her. The first time she needs to run something based on win9x, she's dead in the dirt. I just see a too long minus column here.
That's my 2 cents; I'll go away.

I have at last found your PC details:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/consumerdocs/Consumer_QRG/pres400.pdf
WfW 3.11 would be best O/S, if you are planning to connect to the College LAN then you will need the updated TCP/IP stack:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;99891
and IE5 16bit browser http://classic.tucows.com/preview/4842.htmlUnfortunately this will take around 100MB of hard drive space, which will not leave much room for anything else.
My advice is to use it to learn about DOS - www.mwpms.uklinux.net

i have an MCA token ring card. maby theres an adptor to get get it with with ethernet. but mca was only used in ibm ps/2s and clones. the older compaqs have EISA. you can put ISA cards or EISA cards in there. I have 3 of these just laying around.
