OS: DOS 6.22
CPU/Ram: 75MHz / 24MB
Comment:

I want to install windows 3.1 on my old Thinkpad 755CX. I'm running Dos 6.22 and every time I start setup to install windows 3.1 it gives an error that "Program is too big to fit in memory".
Here I would like to mention that Himem and Emm386 are running and I have 617KB of conventional memory [mem /c/p]. No matter how I change my config.sys the same error appears. Please help.

The file win.com may be corrupt.

BTW, if you want to get more conventional memory, then please upgrade to MS-DOS 7.10, since MS-DOS 7.10 can load its kernel and COMMAND into UMB memory automatically.

Make sure that the file himem.sys is in your DOS directory (if not, you can download it in Google). Add this line at your config.sys

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS

config.sys is located in the root directory of your startup drive (ussually c:) and probably hide.

Mstr,

I believe you didn't read his post carefully. He has already said:

"Here I would like to mention that Himem and Emm386 are running and I have 617KB of conventional memory [mem /c/p]. No matter how I change my config.sys the same error appears."

The most possible reason I think is that the Windows setup file is corrupt or the system is not very stable.

Have you tried running MEMMAKER? It seems to help allocation of base memory a lot better than the default MSDOS install does. You may free up enough to install Windows.

Ok Wengier, you're all right but for me himem.sys is the best high memory manager, i've having very big troubles with emm386.exe and i don`t like it.
Ahh... better yet is the version of himem coming with wfwg311, i don`t know how it works but is more stable and my laptop never shows me a low memory message.
