Hi again,

After installing microsoft network client 3.0 (which by the way you can no longer download from microsoft (the link won't work)) I now get the following message when trying to boot....
"emm386 DMA Buffer is too small ADD D=64 parameter and reboot"
my question is where do i add this and what is the correct way to add it?
I can start the computer now with a boot disk from win 95 and "rem" all the lines for the network to start it,but then I still have no connection to my other computers????

You need to edit your CONFIG.SYS file, found in your root directory. The line loading EMM386.exe should be modified, leaving any existing commands that are there alreaady, and add the D=64 to the end of this line.
For example:

DEVICE=C:\EMM386.exe HIGHSCAN I=B000-B7FF NOEMS D=64

I'd hold off on the 'highscan' option:

"On some computers, specifying this switch may have no effect or cause EMM386 to identify upper memory areas as available when they are not. As a result, your computer might stop responding."

Might not want the I=B000-B7FF either - it disables 'mono' freeing some upper memory, but can occasionally cause problems.

you also need to specify the location of emm386.exe when you list it in config.sys (unless it actually is in the c:\ root directory)

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe NOEMS D=64

or

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe NOEMS D=64

For the 'D= ' dma switch:

"Valid values are in the range 16 through 256. The default value is 32."

So, yeah, try 64, if you still get the error, increase the value - note the more you increase it, the more memory it uses.

Hi,

Thank you, I got the computer to start without a boot disk, but still no network.
I'm going to go back to www.wown and start all over again now that I have that line in there.

Leon
ps. wish me luck!!
