Hopefully someone can/will E-mail u the PROGMAN.EXE file that u need...unfortunately I'm nowhere near my Win3.1 Laptops or Disk Sets...

If u are willing to do things the hard way & have a good understanding of DOS then u may want to try the following:

Download a copy of Calmira or Calmira XP...using any DOS ZIP/UNZIP program, UNZIP Calmira to a directory named C:\CALMIRA...then using the DOS EDIT program, edit ur SYSTEM.INI file:

change the line that reads:
SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE
to:
SHELL=C:\CALMIRA\CALMIRA.EXE

Now of course this will only work if u find a ZIPPED version of Calmira, rather than a Self-Extracting EXE version...I don't want to make things more difficult for u, but I usually try to convert Errors & System Crashes into a learning experience...

HTH...

hmm that only happens to me when either:
a) my shell can't run
-or-
b) the line shell=c:\"windir"\progman.exe is missing from my system.ini file

check and make sure your system.ini has the line above just replace "windir" with whatever your windows directory is mine is win31 because i have other windows versions. then once you've done that check to see if you have progman.exe in your windows directory if not download another shell like calmira which you can get from www.calmira.org um....wait that site is down for now try one of the sites listed above

Before I read your messages I reformated the laptop using the safe format command the system wont start now and even without a floppy disk in it says invalid system disk. I have tried using a win 95 boot disk to try and reload win 3.11 but invalid, a win 98 boot disk gets me to the dos prompt but then nothing works. I know you dont use a boot disk to reload win 3.11 but that also said invalid system disk. It wont even load win 95 from the win 98 boot disk. What I need is some advice do I now have to fdisk and format before I can reload I have dos disks but dont know where to go from here would the dos disks start to load when I start the system afterwards. I only have a floppy drive and would also like to know how to save my win 95 cd rom to floppies. Thanks a lot. Martyn.S

ok first thing is first, windows 95 comes on cd's ad floppies if i remember right i think it was something like 15 floppies so if you can't find them use programs like pkzip to save things to multiple disks but your best bet would be to get a external cd drive. now you say you reformated, why did you do that the error you posted could esaliy be fixed. anyway you need to get your info back i suggest an udelete program or maybe even send your hard drive to a data recovery speacilist that would cost anywhere from $200 to $1000 other then that just try to reinstall your os
