I recently obtained a second-hand computer. After a little bit of tweaking I was able to get it to work correctly. It had windows 3.1 already installed on it. I used the computer (and windows 3.1) several times. I did NOT change any files. Now when it boots up it starts loading windows then goes back to DOS with the message "Error loading gdi.exe". It does NOT say "must reinstall windows" or anything. What does GDI.exe do? How can I fix this problem? Note: I do NOT have the win3.1 setup disk.

GDI stands for Graphics Device Interface. Your GDI.exe file is probably corrupted. If you mail me, i can send you a fresh copy.

I too have the same problem with gdi.exe. Only I
have a NEW Toshiba Satellite 1750. On boot, just
after itīs started loading the drivers for win98 SE, I
get the message "Error loading gdi.exe. You must
reinstall windows." and then it promptly turns off.
This is something I DONīT want to do, as my copy
will wipe my drive back to "factory settings" and I
have no backup of my stuff.
If you could help me, Iīd be very grateful,
Eric.

After being asked repeatedly for the file GDI.EXE, i decided to upload it to my briefcase. Many time an "error loading GDI,EXE" is caused by a corrupted file. Just rename the file as GDI.OLD, then go to my briefcase and get a fresh copy of GDI.EXE in my Utilities folder. Download it into c:\windows\system (or copy it from floppy!), then reboot. In most cases, this will solve your problem.

I had a similar gdi.exe probelm. I was able to get it fixed by extracting a new GDI.exe from my windows upgrade disk.

Thanks for the tip.

Everytime I boot, I get the GDI.exe error. Thing is, it's there. So, I tried to overwrite it with another one. Didn't work. Then I restarted the computer with the WIN2k CD in it because I wanted to install WIN2k and it failed to boot from the CD-ROM. Then I created a boot disk and started the comp. with it. I then started the setup for win95 and WHAM, just after the license agreements, computer locks or actually reboot without asking. I think an IDE cable may be messed up somewhere, but why would it give me the gdi.exe error?
