Subject: enought memory for 95? OS: wfwg3.11 CPU/Ram: 486sx@25mhz

Comment: Why can 95 run on my labtop. it has 3072kb extended and 640kb onboard. isnt that 4mb ram, enough for Windows 95 I rcently got this notebook, it had a dead LCD. I hooked it up to a monitor, and got it going. I started 95 setup and it said something about needing at least 2,000kb memory to start setup. I have 3072kb extended and 640kb base. that well over 2000kb(2mb). I am trying out 95fe. all my pcs are running either 95c and above or wfwg 3.11 and below. I want to try 95fe to some differances in it between 98 and 95fe.

Reply: (edit)Bare minimum if I recall, is 8 MB. 12-16MB average minimum should be used depending on what applications will be sucking up your resources.

Reply: (edit)OK, I know its going to be slow though. Never buy as "AS-IS" computer. It said 8mb, and it has just under 4mb. The stupid guy read the "about" about. for some reason it says double under the "about" box.

Reply: (edit)don is correct... I had Win95 installed on my 386 Contura 3/25 with 4mb onboard RAM... I also have Win95 installed on two of my 486 IBM PS/Note 425 with 4mb onboard RAM...I recently upgraded the RAM on both of these laptops to 20mb & Win95 now runs alot better...but Win95 did install & run pretty good before the RAM upgrade... Reply: (edit)You have 4Mb homerj, so it should install and run. It won't want to do any multitasking so just be happy with it doing one thing at a time.

Reply: (edit)homerj, Time to learn the basics. You have 640k + 384k in the first megabyte of memory on your machine. 640+384=1024=1Mb You have 3072Kb extended memory 1024x3=3072=3Mb 1024+3072=4096=4Mb 1+3=4 You have 4Mb memory in that machine. Period. You need to learn the difference between ems and xms. Skip

Reply: (edit)On 386s, Windows 95 Setup will generate a not enough memory error even if you have at least 4MB of RAM if the following is true: The BIOS RAM configuration information in the CMOS is wrong. Most likely, it's set at 1MB or 2 MB. Enter the BIOS setup, manually tell the BIOS under the RAM configuration section that the PC has 4 MB of RAM, save the BIOS setting changes and exit the BIOS setup. I had that problem with an old Tandy 386SX PC and interestingly, even when I did not enter the BIOS setup to tell the BIOS there is more than 1MB of RAM, Windows 3.1 did not refuse to run in 386 enhanced mode. I believe Windows 95 Setup gets the PC's RAM size information from the CMOS unlike Windows 3.1.
