okay, i've tested 3x on my system before and it works, but now i have a dual boot of windows XP pro and media center, what i was wondering is how i can place 3x on my 3rd partition and force it to boot using the boot.ini file. Can this be done or will i need another boot manager?

You need to load the oldest Windows FIRST, in this case 3.1, then add the other operating systems, or use a program like Partition Magic to make a space for it.

Well, of course not. I assumed he knew that DOS had to be loaded first since he said he had done it before.

Actually you have to install MS-DOS5 or 6 first prior to installing w3.x. MS-DOS is required to be on the first primary partition ie C: DRIVE (FAT16). If you GOOGLE you will find boot managers, this should enable you to trick MS-DOS into thinking it is on the correct primary partition

Edit your BOOT.INI to add your DOS partition. The DOS line should look something like this:

C:\ = "MS-DOS"

Just replace C with whatever your DOS drive is.
