Reply: (edit)The Win Modem will not work, you need a "Hardware" modem. Heck, you need a hardware modem, Win3x or no, because software modems suck. Where did you get an Adaptec CDRW as they don't make drives to the best of my knowledge? I am assuming you mean an SCSI CDRW that uses an an Adaptec SCSI card, so you will need to use DOS burning software from Golden Hawk: Golden Hawk DOS CD Recording And/Or Ahead Nero 4.0 The last version of Nero to support Windows 3.x is 4.0.3.0 which is the 4.0 version available for download from the link above. The DOS level SCSI drivers for the SCSI card and the CDRW were provided on the floppy disk that came with your drive and also at the manufactures web site.

Reply: (edit)What is the difference between a hardware modem and a winmodem? My CDRW is plugged into my IDE port, it is set as the secondary master drive. is there a driver for it? where could I download one? My CDRW is not actually made by Adapec, it is made by Pacific Digital, but for some reason an Adapec CD driver works for my CDRW. Could it have to do with my system being a micron? When I fire up my system, it says "booting from Adapec CD drive" (set as 1st boot in my BIOS) Where could I download a driver for it? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)A software modem (Winmodem) only works in Win9x+ and some LINUX dists. A software modem passes-off all of it's controller functions to the CPU using up resources and causing instability. This generic driver from Acer works for virtually all CDROMs and uses little memory: http://www.acercm.com.tw/global/service/cdr/drivers/cdrom/apicd214.exe To burn disks with a IDE CD-RW in Win3x use the Nero software linked above.

Support for (expensive) USR sucks so try this: http://home.wanadoo.nl/s.n.l.jankie/soft/disk141.zip mail me if it works s.n.l.jankie@wanadoo.nl I have problems getting mine to work well in Win95, so please mail me if you have a solution for that....

Reply: (edit)HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! HELP! I am in need of some serious help here. I have been through every one of these messages at least twice! And got a message on my browser that I had reached the end of the internet... THE END OF THE INTERNET!!! is that possible... Man I'm bummed :o( Here is the problem: I was trying to upgrade from 3.1 to Windows 95. There was not enough disk space available to do the upgrade. Well the hard drive went to the land of format and none of the sound card or cdrom drivers were backed up. Here is what I am working with: An old crusty, wooden gear runnin', case made from granite, blue haired Packard bell. It has DOS 6.22 on it. It also has windows 3.1. There is enough space now to let it load Win 95 if I can get some help on loading some drivers. I have a sound card, but not sure exactly who makes it, it says in large letters MOZART-16. I have seen many references referring it as a SoundBlaster. The sound card has 4 different places to hook up the ribbon to the cdrom. One for PANASONIC, one for IDE, one for MITSUMI, and one for SONY. The PANASONIC, IDE and MITSUMI will allow the ribbon to attach but the SONY is smaller that the others, less pins. When the cdrom was working last week before the format, it was and still is hooked up to the IDE pin port on the sound card. I have downloaded tons of different drivers, been through tons and tons, hours and hours of these help boards and still no remedy. I know the system works so it has to be somewhere in the configuration. I have configured the autoexec.bat & config.sys like others have said, added switches, removed them and same errors: MSCDEX not installed No valid CDROM device drivers selected No drives are attached, drives are powered down, or communication failed The device driver is not installed No drives found aborting installation Device drive not found: 'MSCD001' or any others I have matched up in my autoexec.bat & config.sys BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH..... When I start with a boot disk using start with cdrom support I get the same errors, however it does successfully load the diagnostic tools on to drive D. This is the only time I get a drive D. Some of the soundcard tests that I have ran stops me and says "Hardware Initialize Fail" and on some of the other tests, I hear sound. The sound is being pulled from the disc not the cdrom. I'm not concerned with the sound as much as I am with getting the cdrom to work and to read Win 95. When I go into the setup utility and Advanced COMES setup, there is no where to config a cdrom, maybe because the cdrom is hooked through the soundcard? I have been to Best Buy ( EXACT A1WEBBASIX@YAHOO.COM

Reply: (edit)This last problem must be solved when you have the correct drivers for the Mozart card. I dont have this driver (or any links to it) right now, so you have to find them yourself. I am shure the correct drivers will make the soundcard and cdrom function well in Win3xx. For Win9x you are left on your own because this is not the Win9x forum! ;-)

Reply: (edit)Hello K. Semler, To resond to the original message, I have been searching everywhere for Nero 4.0.0.3, mentioned to me earlier by Doofus. Unfortunately the earliest version I can find is 4.0.9.1, which does not like Win3xx, with or without Win32s. It seems the M_______t Mafia have cleaned up and no software sights seem to offer Win 3xx material any longer. If you, or anyone else, should come across a source of 4.0.0.3. please let me know. 'The End of the Internet?'; sounds like 'the Restaurant at the End of the Universe!'. Regards, Jon Glenny.
