Downloaded a game from the internet on my computer for my grandaughter to use on her old small computer but we can't get it to open on Drive A. I opened on my computer and it worked O.K. But when we put it in my grandaughter's right off it asked to "Associate" it to a program. Just guessing we selected "Media Player". Now it asks us to download a media player each time we try to open the game on the floppy. She has no internet with this computer. Can anyone give us STEP BY STEP instructions on how to be able to open the floppy in Drive A for a not-so-smart Grandma? The Windows 3.1 is soooo different from what I am used to. I am wondering if this could be updated to Windows 98. I have a floppy for Windows 98 2nd Edition. What do you think? Thanks for any help!!!!!

Hard to advise without actual details - what is the file's extension (the 3 letters after the 'dot')?
Kinda doubtful that machine could run 98, but again, need to know the details - in this case, processor speed, amount of installed RAM and hard drive size.
A Win98 floppy cannot be used (by itself) to install Windows - that requires the CD, about 130Mb of files
Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?

When we had to select an "Associate", "Media Player" it changed the name of the game I saved it as from Raindrop to Raindr~.zip. Each time we try to open the floppy it says we need to download the media player. She's doesn't have internet. Where in Windows 3.1 does a person find the Ram, processor speed, and hard drive size? In my Millenium I know where to look for such things but in the Windows 3.1 I am lost. Thanks for the help!

Ok - that's a compressed Zip file archive - you cannot run that file, and likely shouldn't have associated it with media player. To open it up on a machine running Win31, you can use this older version of Winzip - it'll have to be installed, first.
Once Winzip is installed, you would use it to open the file and unpack the contents to a folder on the hard drive - then you would probably have to run the game's setup or installation program.
It may very well be that this game will not work under Windows3.1
The reason the file is now seen as Raindr~.zip is because older Windows & DOS versions can't use the 'long file names' common today.
Yes, it can be a little bit tricky finding out all of the information. The memory is usually counted up on the screen before the computer boots up - sometimes there will be information regarding the processor as well.
The machine is actually running DOS - Win31 is just a kind of add on program. There may be a DOS program on the computer that will report some info - from DOS, try entering
MSD
and see if an information screen comes up.
While it may be possible this machine could run 98, odds are it wouldn't run it very well. Just a guess, of course, but it sounds like it could be an older model.
Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?
