installed dos 7.1 and win 3.11 both went in fine but when i opened it up after rebooting it does nothing but a blinking cursor
not sure what i did wrong but know something is wrong
this is the same laptop i had problems with the cmos configuration and fixed it but still having alot of problems now with the install
if nothing else can someone please tell me how to reformat the drive and wipe it clean for a new install of dos and win 3.11
any help would be appreciated it
thanks
liz

If this is the same laptop, with only 1Mb of RAM, then it will barely run Windows 3.1 (if at all) - as we went over in your original post.
IF by Win311 you mean Windows for Workgroups 3.11, that has somewhat higher memory requirements and must have both himem.sys & emm386.exe loaded - it probably won't run at all with that amount of RAM.
There's also no compelling reason to install DOS7 on this relic, as the hard drive would not benefit from 'large disk support' - an earlier DOS such as 6xx would be just fine, and require fewer resources

One prob. with DOS 7.10 is that format.com is not on the boot disk, it is in the .pak file, which is password protected.

Forgot to mension, WFW 3.11 needs 2 Mb. Memory to run, windows 386 would run ok though. (maby even 3.0)

finally got the dos to boot
come to find out it had a boot sector virus one called NYB in it
used norton and it repaired it and then it booted up to dos finally
also when i booted it the first time it showed it had 3 mb memory
but when i booted it this time it wont go to win
yall say i need to have at least 2 mbs of ram and it says it has three so do i need to reinstall windows since i got the virus out of it
also how do i tell which port is com1 for the mouse
thanks and sorry to be such a pain
liz

You seem to have quite a problem with virus. Until the machine is free from infection, you will continue to have difficulties.
The amount of memory usually shows on the initial screen when you start the computer - if in doubt, enter
mem
.. to get a brief summary. It would have been nice if you'd entered that info (extended memory) in the CPU/RAM field (that's what it's for)
Windows is just an application, and probably wasn't affected by the virus - generally, if DOS (and your hardware) is in good order, Windows 'should' run - although there may be other factors.
If the COM port isn't identified by a label on the machine, short of pulling it apart to peer at the motherboard, I'd suggest trial and error
