dos 6.0 to win98?

hi everyone, i have decided to give up on installing win 3.1 on my 486 dx2/66 because of setup problems i have been consistently encountering. i have now decided to run win 98 on it instead, and i still have a setup problem. i am using the version for pc's without windows, the only os i currently have on it is dos 6.22. when i begin the setup it says that the computer already has an os on it and i should exit setup, reboot from the hard drive and run setup again. well fair enough but i would have thought that you would be able to install it over dos, so i proceeded anyway and sure enough i get a general protection fault error and thats the end of the setup. is this to do with fat16 and fat32? i have a celery 400 running win 98 (which i'm using now) so should i plonk the 486's hard drive in as slave and format it as fat 32, then put it back in and try again? or should i just reformat from the 486 itself, not install dos, and boot directly from the win98 boot disk? i know theres nothing wrong with my win98 disk cos its brand new and i took it out of the box just yesterday. i have copies of both dos 6.0 and 6.22, so no problems with wiping and reinstalling there. thanks in advance marbs

Format hard drive and reinstall DOS, should take about 15-20min to do this.

if you want to install 98 dont fool with reinstalling dos yes you should just reformat from the 486 itself, not install dos, and boot directly from the win98 boot disk

oh yeah it would be better if you formatted from the 98 boot disk itself rather than a dos boot disk.

For me DOS installs the mouse driver and memory managers. When I tried to install Win 98 without it setup would always freeze up.
