I recently aquired an old IBM Thinkpad 340 and was told that the screen was colour & to have a fiddle around with the settings. Stupid me played around with the display settings and now my windows is all lines & dots. I cannot see any icons or menus HELP! Also it has been 10 years since I used 3.1 can you tell me how I can get into DOS at start up? If you can help, please contact me ASAP as I'm getting very cranky! LOL

DOS boots before Windows loads - your autoexec.bat likely launches Win31.

Assuming you're running M$-DOS 6 or higher you should be able to gain control by pressing F5 for a clean boot or F8 for line by line confirmation.

Sometimes CTRL-C will interrupt the process - or you could boot from a boot disk.

Once in DOS enter:

cd\windows

setup

and that should let you reset your video configuration - if in doubt choose basic VGA 16 colors.

Do you mean you have copies of your Windows installation files on your hard drive?

You can probably point the setup program to their location or else copy to a floppy disk.

Win3xx installation files are in a compressed format, Windows looks for files on a particular disk and expands them - usually more than one file, often more than one disk.

If that doesn't work, check your email for a possible solution.

oh, I'd forgotten:

cd\windows\desktop

will get you there under DOS, but I'm not so sure that's going to be helpful.

post back with more specific info on what you're trying to do
