I've finally upgraded to a Windows 98 system and would like to transfer files from my old 486 with Windows 3.1 through a serial cable. It seems as if the software required for this is only available for Win95 or later. Is there ANY way at all to accomplish what I need to do?

That is correct, DCC is only available for Win'95 or higher. However, for the price of a couple of cheap Network Cards (Linksys are popular and cheap) and a vist here:

you can have a home network. Pretty easy to do, inexpensive, and adds at least two points to your Geek Index ;-)

If you have a 'Null Modem' Serial Cable you can use FastLynx which is availabe on the MS-DOS Page of my Resource site at
http://www/powerload.co.uk
It is a 16bit MS-DOS program, but will still work under Windows 98 (Even on a FAT32 Drive!) Its only limit is that it does not support 'Long File Names' but will copy them in short format OK. Whats more its FREE!

Your serial cable, as long as it is a "null modem" cable will let the two computers communicate. Just run the fastlynx program as Mick suggested or you can try LapLink3 for DOS

Heck, I've used fastlynx and dcc, but I've found it's a lot easier and much much quicker to transfer files by actually putting both drives in the same machine. then putting them back once I'm done.
