I was trying to delete file to makes more space and i screwed my whole computer. I was wondering how i could delete windows 3.1 from DOS and then setup Windows 98. HELP! thanks
Justin

at C:\ type DELTREE \WINDOWS
it will then ask you if you want to delete the directory WINDOWS and all of its contents. type y and hit enter. After that, switch to your cd-rom (usually d:\). Put the Windows 98 CD in and type setup at d:\

Well,Eric its right and wrong the same time,'cos if you do that, then you'll leave a few number of lines in your autoexec.bat and config.sys files, that maybe stops DOS to load properly,or even just load.
You must first rename your backup files with the proper names,I mean, find files named autoexec.bak,or autoexec.old, the same with config.whatever, and rename those files as autoexec.bat and config.sys, and then do what Eric says.
One more note,if you wanna setup win98 in your 'puter,my advice is to make a clean install,so you may wanna format your HDD first, and,as almost every win98 CD its autobootable, proceed with the instalacion.

DOS and Windows 3x are 16 bit applications whereas Windows98 is a 32 bit application.
If you want to install Win98 properly, make sure that you have a couple of things. First, a legal Win98 SE disk as opposed to the original first release of Win98 that had many driver and DLL problems. Secondly, make sure that you have a proper Windows98 boot floppy - with auto detect CD Rom drivers. If you need one, let me know, and I can email you one, complete with instructions on how to use it.
Be advised though, that Win98 takes up quite a bit more space than DOS and Win3x combined. OVER twice as much space!
So, I would suggest that you format your hard drive from scratch, thereby wiping it completely clean. I format drives even twice, just for the heck of it, to be extra certain that there is no "file embedding" going on. Once the drive is formatted properly, you'll have as much space as possible for the Win98 installation.
Most DOS applications will no longer function though, or only with a proper boot disk (a copy of your Win98 setup boot disk should suffice though). And SOME Win3x applications may give you difficulties too, if they're by "not so reputable" third party vendors, other than Microsoft.
Good luck.
Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

If you're still using a pretty old motherboard - that being my assumption since you're talking about lack of space and moving up to Win98, there's a strong possibility that your CD Drive will *NOT* be bootable with the Win98 CD, since that requires a bios setting on your mobo to make it so. Many of the older mobos did not come with that option. Thought you might want to know.

Hi leembo. Just for the record the first version of win98 is'nt that bad. All my boxes use it with IE5.5. You see a clean install is the key. The only reason there was driver probs is that MS changed the driver model, as they do so often with in OS change, so manufactures had to do a catch up. Similar to what we've seen with XP.
Win98se introduced its own problems such as the well known lockup on shutdown fault and others.
The main advantage of SE is ICS which is easily worked around with good free third party software.

Hi there, Hmmm . . .
Oh, I know that all of the Windows versions have their unique problems, but I was one of the "premiere" beta testers (whatever that means) of Win98 the original and when compared to the SE version, I really feel that SE is far superior and with considerable fewer "side effects" than the original Win98 release. Albeit, IE5.5 and SR1 does take care of most of the problems. For you and me, that might not be anywhere as big of an issue though, as for many of the people who ask for help on these forums - people who don't know how to work around some things, or who lack a lot of computer understanding . . .
That's it, last post for me tonight. See y'all tomorrow, and don't forget . . .
Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

That's strange about SE... Because once I installed SE all sorts of things went wrong. the system wasn't as stable under SE as it was with the original version of Win98. And yes... I did do a fresh install, as I always do.I've run SE on two different boxes here and both times I ended up switching back to the original 98.
It just seems kinda buggy. Like when it takes three years for the properties window for my ethernet cards to come up in the device manager. how annoying!
