Comment:

I run scandisk from drive C to fix logical partition D (first of six - D E F G H I).
I get 'Scandisk encountered a data error while reading the FAT entry for cluster . . .'
for clusters 2, 15998, 59 and 15974 - in this curious order. Tell me there's a fix for this - please! (all my PCB designs are on "D"!)
(I know, I know I should've backed 'em up!!)

PS I'm afraid I do not know the meaning of "Homepage URL" and "Image URL" - sorry!
PD.

The hard drive may be used again if you do a zero procedure on it.It does extend the life of old drives or otherwise unusable drives but does not repair worn or broken drives.Generic programs for this are Diskzero by Kzin or Killdisk by LSoft Technology.Drive manufacturers have their own programs. Both can be used for emergency work.

http://www.kzin.com
Use a boot disk for diskzero and at dos prompt type:
diskzero 0 -z
Change the 0 for a 1 if it is a second disk.
Killdisk is a Freedos based bootable diskette that does the same with a GUI interface that lets you choose the drive.I have salvaged a 40 GB drive that had an error at sector 2 on C drive that scandisk could not repair making the drive unbootable. After the zero procedure is completed use your boot disk to do fdisk and format like you normally do.The bad sectors that the procedure closed will never be detected by scandisk in the future. You will not erase a drive by mistake because these programs require you approve the work done by a simple sentence you need to copy as shown.Good luck.

See above answer to a post with similar problem.Surface defects that won't be repaired by scandisk can be cured if you make use of the bootable diagonstic diskette from the hard drive manufacturer website. You run the tests on the drive and make corrections if something wrong is found. This is for the problems that above mentioned erasing procedure won't be of help like bad cluters. Both solutions lead to loss of data unfortunately.Good luck.
