Comment: I need help! I recently upgraded my win3.11 system having 850 MB HDD to win98 system having 20 GB HDD.I want to copy all my data on 850 MB HDD to 20 GB HDD running win98. Problem is win3.11 has non-dos partion & win98 by default has FAT32 partion. so when i make 850 MB HDD as slave drive i am unable to find partition for of 850 MB HDD.. Is there a way I can get my old data from 850 MB HDD into my Windows 98 system having 20 GB HDD without loss of data.

Reply: (edit)Windows 3.1x relies on MS-DOS, and MS DOS only supports the FAT16 file allocation tables. FAT16 is also the format your floppy disks are formatted in. The only disadvantage to the FAT16 file structure is that it only supports drives up to 2.0 GB, while the FAT32 file structure will support up to 2 TB (Terra Bytes) NTFS, which is not supported by MS DOS without addon utilities, is commonly used by Windows NT versions and supports an unlimited size of drive. Windows 3.1x will not install on an NTFS file allocation table, as most NT versions do not support FAT32. Windows 9x will support both FAT16 and FAT32 which ard both considered DOS partitions. Since you stated that your old hard drive regeisters as having a non-DOS partition, that means that either your FAT got corrupted, or got deleted. If either of these are the case, there is no way of recovering any data without purchasing an undeletion utility.

Reply: (edit)Hmm, tht is strange. Chave you considered installing powerquestst's partition magic, creating a FAT16 partition on your windows 98 hard drive in the unallocated space or unused space, setting the WFW deive as the primary boot device, copy over the contents to the FAT16 partition on your Windows 98 hard drive, copy over the contents of the FAT partition over to the FAT32 partition, then merge the two partitions?

Reply: (edit) What I've been doing for years is to copy MWBACKUP to Win 98 and then transfering the backup files from computer to computer. Works like a dream even if it is only a 16bit program. You will have copy the file vfintd.386 to Win 98 as well and set it up as a device in the system.ini file. The files that you will have to transfer are: mstools.dll mwbackupf.dll mwbackupr.dll mwbackup.exe mwbackup.ini mwgrafic.dll vfintd.386 mwbackup.hlp wntools.grp I also transfer the other two programs in the group, your backup program should work with these files.

Reply: (edit)All of you missed the big boat. Hit the showers. I'll bet money he has some "overlay" software on the drive, like EZ-bios or something similar. Guess what? Fdisk will show this as "non dos partition", and trying to use the drive as a slave WONT WORK. You say it still boots? Can you put the old drive in as master and put your new drive in as slave, and do it that way, then switch the drives around when done?
