I have a 486 with 8 MB of ram and a 56k modem. I dial up to my ISP but when after it dials in it says you have been disconnected from the computer you dialed into. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this. Thanks Lori

I don't think 56k modems are compatible with 486's.

I agree with the person above. Can you take it back and get a 33.6 modem?

lori, 56K modems certainly are compatible with 486s! if you can plug the modem into your motherboard, and you get it to dial up, then it works just fine. try giving your internet provider a call, and tell them of your woes; they will help you configure your modem settings from your control panel, so that you can connect (they're paid to do that!). it may also be a problem on their end, as i've had that problem before myself.
so don't take your modem back!

lori I have a 56K modem running on a 486, using wfwg3.11, so I can confirm what james tells you. The problem with connection sounds like an ISP problem as suggested, but it could also be that there can be problems with a conflict in connection speeds. The modem sends data faster than the cpu can process it, causing a disconnection. (I had this problem). The solution was to alter the modem's ovation string to connect only at a slower speed. It was the modem support people who told me how to do this, so you might like to contact them. Peter

I have a packard bell with a 28.8k modem. I bought it in 1996. I have just gotten the internet, but everytime I try to connect, it gives me a connection error. It tells me to check modem to see if it is hooked up properly and it is. What could be the problem?
