Following a tip from a previous topic on how to connect to the internet with Win3.1x, I downloaded IE 3.03 and installed it. My modem is a Xircom CreditCard Ethernet/56K Modem combo, which wasn't listed in the list of modems to install so I just selected the Generic PCMCIA option. Then it tried to dial the number to download a list of service providers in the area, set to 1-800-793-6675. Listening closely to the little tiny speaker inside the card, I heard the number being dialed and then the familiar "Your call could not be completed as dialed. Please check the number and try again." I verified this by calling the number on my phone, and it gave the same message. Obviously, this number is so old that it's no longer in service. The question is, what is the new number to dial, if any? If I don't have a workable number, I can't even start up IE.

Sokko,
Personally I prefer using a local Internet provider. Just look in your phone book or paper and call some Internet providers in your area.
Ask them if they provide support for Windows 3.1. Don't worry about it too much if they don't, it just means they don't have anyone on staff, you can still use any Internet provider if they seem helpful.
The link below goes through the steps of setting up Internet Explorer for Windows 3.1.

This is information that you will need to get from the Internet Provider for SETUP:
Internet Explorer SETUP
----------------------
Primary DNS
Secondary DNS
Dialup number
Username
PasswordEMAIL SETUP
-----------
Username
Password
SMTP address
POP3 addressFor some Internet providers the USERNAME and Password might be the same for EMAIL and INTERNET SETUP but they are usually different.
I may have left some info out but hopefully that link will clear up some things.
Good Luck,
DR

This sentence should have continued like this:
Don't worry about it too much if they don't, it just means they don't have anyone on staff who is familiar with Windows 3.1.

That's okay, I was just a bit confused. My dad gets free dial-up access provided by the company he works for (remotely checking email and all that), so I can probably use the number he does.
