Subject: computer won't boot up |
Comment: I have an old IBM Personal System 2 computer. Model(8560). It runs, or should I say it ran windows 3.1. When I go to boot it up, I get 3 different numbers. 1. 601 2. 162 3. 163 Then two beeps, and a flashing cursor. Can not type anything after the cursor. It will stare at you all day long. I have NO clue on what this means, or what I can do to fix the problem. Can ANYBODY HELP me in (SIMPLE ENGLISH), on what might be going on, or whom I can contact to find out what is the problem, and what I can do to fix this problem? Thanks for all who are concerned, and would appreciate any feedback!!!!!!!

Reply: (edit)162=run setup as computer setup is incorrect 163=run setup and set time 601= hard drive fail I hope you have a set up disk or try to push f1 or f10 at the flash of rectangular coursor (when you start computer). when you get into set up you must set the proper numbers for drives and screen and time and date. you must do this or computer will not start. This is why some computers will not work in the year 2000. they will just keep asking you to set the date and then quit. good luck

Reply: (edit)Mike...Owen is right...but I also suspect your CMOS battery is dead, or very close to...you are loosing your bios settings which are kept intact with the CMOS battery...I don't know if your CMOS battery is hard wired, or some type of clip in battery...you need to find out and replace it...Do this before you try to re-set bios 'cause I think you don't have enuf spark to keep the settings...
