I went delete happy and accidently erased my Jazz Multimedia and ESS Audio Drive drivers and can't retrieve them. My machine can't recognize the CD drive. I don't have a disk for Jazz multimedia (it was already on the machine when I got it), and ESS is on CD. What do I do now?

loudkitty,

Here are 2 things you can try.

1. You can attempt to "undelete the missing files".

This command is available in later versions of DOS. Exit to DOS and type UNDELETE [enter] and you will get a list of files that you can be saved and the probability that they will still be good.

2. Open the computer and get the make and model number of both the CD-ROM drive and the ESS sound card.

If no model number is apparent on the sound card, get the marking of the main chip, probably something like ES1869.

Drivers are available at a number of places,

www.driverguide.com

is the one I and many others use a lot. Sign up is free to get log-on name and password.

You can also come back here and post for more help after you get the make and model numbers.

Good luck

My friend is having trouble of Windows XP recognizing his CD Drive. He has some experience and I tought him a lot so I believe him when he says he has them hooked up in the correct spots. I know that 95 and 98 require for the drivers to be botted up during the running of autoexec.bat file. But am not sure how Windows Xp start the drivers for a cd rom. I probably won't check back on the message board so if any help please email me at majacob_class02@yahoo.com

I got a driver. Windows didn't recognize it.

Those files are *poof*. The automatic delete took care of that the day I did it. Is there another generic driver that I can use? I tried one and it didn't work. (It was oak-something...) Where can I find one?
