Comment:

I have now replaced the small round battery. I have downloaded spo308 to my computer then winzip gave me the option to extract it so i did and choose A: drive. So it extracted onto my 720kb floppy disk. I put it into the Compaq and hit F1 and it said "Invalid system disk" once again. How can i be sure that the battery i replaced is working? And what can i do now?
Thanks

You do not unzip to floppy, you unzip to a folder and run the executionable file inside the archive something like 'SP0308.exe'in command line.

All Compaq Softpaq's are designed to create 1 or more floppies (like plainandsimple says) from the executable. If you're dealing with sp0308.exe (c. late 286/early 386) you'll need to make sure that you're not putting in a 1.44MB disk.

I had to format the 720 Kb disk in the same compaq, booting it with a sistem disk and then FORMAT A: /F:720 with the blank disk. then restore the sp-disk to it in another working machine. in my case the compaq didn´t like disks formated by the newer machine. it also seems that windows doesn´t like to format 720 disks any more.
