Comment: Hello, I first want to say that everybody that posts here has helped my in some little way. I was given an old 386 laptop with win 3.1 on it by my mother who bought it for $30 at the thrift store. She has no idea what to do with it and never had a comp of her own till win 98 came out. Well I will get to the point now cause I could gab for hours about nothing important at all. What I want to know is how can I tell if I have a modem install in this thing? When I go to start in Calmira (I found this on the net after searching for days on how to get win 95 on it)and I go to setting and click on the control panel there is nothing for modems to click on. Does this mean that there is no modem? I got a version of aol (which I absolutely hate but figured it was the easiest way to get online till I figured out something else) installed on it and when it tries to initialize the modem I hear it dialing and it makes the funny noises and then it just sits there. HELP! My husband says I'm silly and it's not even worth being a doorstopper; but I am determined to get online with this old machine.

Reply: (edit)Well, if you hear "it" dialing - that's likely the modem. Lots of folks access the net using DOS/Win3xx - but much depends on just how good a modem you have installed - usually modems of that era were only 1200 or 2400 bps (pretty slow). LightSpeed's reference page has an early version of IE (including a dialer) that will run on 3xx. Another resource you may want to try would be Syschk - it's a DOS system analyzer, might tell you more about your laptop. Also SiSoft's SAW (same thing, but for Win3xx). Win95 supposedly will run on a 386 with 4 Mb of RAM - but not very well - may as will stick with the OS you've got now ;-)

Reply: (edit)Hi there, Don't forget about the UART 16650 changes and the 56K V90 and V92 changes though. Some real old modems won't work properly or even at all with these newer standards. Some older modems behave strangely too. If you're real lucky, you might have a newer (ha, ha, ha) 28.8K or 33.6K modem that can be upgraded to the V90 standard - and if THAT doesn't work, you might still be able to find an older EXTERNAL 56K modem that you can hook up to your serial port. Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Reply: (edit)I own a Compaq Contura 3/25 laptop...I installed Win3.x & DOS 7.0 Beta... I don't own the optional internal modem for the laptop, but a 386 25mhz CPU will be extremely slow on the net... if u want to get online with a 386, the more RAM the better...if u own a Contura 3/20 it comes with 2mb RAM, & can b upgraded to 10mb RAM max...if u own a Contura 3/25 it comes with 4mb RAM, & can b upgraded to 12mb RAM max... N1...
