Compaq do not make sound chips, if you can find the
make and model of the Compaq then go to
sypport at www.hp.com and look for the
drivers for your model.

Alternatively go to www.hwinfo.com and
download the shareware DOS information utility
which will list information of the PC
chipsets etcetc.

Early compaqs used CLxxx chipsets for sound
and drivers are available from Driver Support at
www.cirrus.com

Searched high and low for that a few years back - the drivers were never made available for download, but Compaq claimed they would mail them for a small fee.

Link is no longer valid since the reorganization of Compaq/HP

The model I had was a Compaq Deskpro XL466 - the sound setup ok under Win95 as 'Sound Blaster Emulation' - the chip was:

Analog Devices
AD1848KP
SoundPort
9427

Gave up on it.

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I have 3 drivers for this Soundcard, you can do a Google search for the following files:

- 1848.zip
- sndport1.zip and sndport2.zip
- qs823drv.exe

If you really cannot find the file elsewhere you can send me an email (see my website) and I ll send it to you......
