Com ports

I'm trying to put a 14.4 or 33.6 modem in an old Acer 486. The modem in there now is a GVC 9648HR and uses Com port 1. When I swap it out with the 14.4 or 33.6, it's not recognized by terminal or the IE 3.02a dialer program. How do I reconfigure com ports? What are they? Thanks.

It sounds to me like maybe the modem you are putting in is Plug-n-Play, and that the 486 system doesn't support PnP. Look on the modems themselves and see if you have jumpers on them. If so, set them to com1. If not, you may not be able to install a faster modem on such an old machine.

Thanks for your help--how do you set the com ports on the modem itself? This modem has two sets of jumpers. One set has five prongs, the other set has three prongs.

One set sets the com port, the other sets the irq. If the settings are not written on it and you don't have the specs, you're in for a game of trial and errors. However, the one that has the more pins should set the irq.

on the modem is there an fcc id #, if so you can log on to www.windrivers.com, go to advanced search an near thew bottom of the page is a search for fcc id's. this search will identify the manufacturer. Once you have this you can search for the manual and possibly the jumper configuration. Also in cmos setup make sure the com ports are enabled. hope this helps.
