Can a CD-Rom work on the same IDE cable as the HDD? I have a 486 with Win3.1 installed, but can't seem to get the CD-Rom working. I'm trying to use the manufacturer (Matsus---a-Kotobuki CR-501-B) driver, but it still says that the driver isn't loaded. I have the CD-Rom attached to the same IDE cable as the HDD, so I'm not sure if that's the problem or not, too. I tried attaching the CD-Rom the the IDE slot on the sound card, but it still didn't read it. Any ideas out there???

Sorry, the manufacturer is Matsus---a-Kotobuki). The driver I loaded was the one I found on the Drivers link on this site.

hiya new guy:
2 other possible suggestions (other than the jumper settings, as mentioned above). One is, some cables do not have the little part in the middle of the plastic connector that is dented out (so that you can install the cable only one way); perhaps it's upside down?
Another possibility is that some systems are actually fussy about which order the harddrive & cdrom are connected, on the same cable. Try switching and see if that works as well.

If your CD drive does not have jumper pins at the rear of the drive for Master, Slave, etc., it's a proprietary drive. (Based upon your description of the system, I think this is a proprietary drive.) IDE drivers will not work. How old is the drive? What's the model #? Drivers for proprietary drives can be downloaded from the net.

You have a proprietery drive that only works when attached to the sound card. I have seen several posts about this problem. If the correct sound card driver is not installed the cdrom drive will never work. Or, so I have been told by a friend with one these things.

packard bell pc's with matsush ita kotobuki cd-roms were connected to sound cards (aztech) which require manual configuration of the sound card's cd-rom adapter before the cd-rom could work. Drivers are hard to find, try driverguide.com to see if you can find the driver for the cd-rom controller under windows 3.1. As for your question wether you can hook up your cd-rom directly to your hard drive controller, well, yes, but try a different cd-rom that is IDE compatible. They are cheap at ebay.com or any local pc shop will sell you a 4x cd-rom for $5

new_guy,
I think that you have a SCSI CD-ROM drive. Is the ribbon cable connecting your hard drive and CD-ROM drive a 50 pin cable?
You can have 8 SCSI devices attached to a cable and they have to be identified by changing jumpers on each device.
In addition, the last device must have a jumper set on it to say it has TERMINATOR power.
You will have to find the jumper settings for your hard drive.
You could set your
hard drive to ID-0 and terminator disabled, CD-ROM to ID-1 terminator enabled
Then install the DOS software for CR-501 SCSI.
This sight lists jumper settings for the CD-503. I am not sure if they will be the same as your 501 but maybe...

I thank everyone for their posts, but I still can't get it to work with any drivers, configuration changes, etc. My next plan of action is to put the CD-Rom back in the Packard Bell Legend I got it out of and buy a cheap new one that doesn't need proprietary software. I may also try to restore the Packard Bell with Win3.1, but I'm not even sure if it works (LOL).

I have some prop. drivers that may work. (I just recently sent them to someone in this or the dos forum and his cd is running fine now.) If you don't want to give up on it just yet, post the make/model of the drive in question.

It's a Matsus---a Kotobuki CR-581-B (I pulled it out today to verify the model#). I also found the driver for it too, but it doesn't work. Anything you're willing to send me to try, I'll try.

I've added the e-mail address above. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I do have one victory so far, though. I figured out how to get the NIC working on a 486 with Win95, so I'm about to try the same with a 486 with Win3.1 on it.

Ok, since were on the subject of CD Roms......why does my light keep flashing on the cd rom even when there isnt a CD in it?
This is in an old 486DX-S, 66MHz system.
I recently got the rom to work in the system but that darn flickering light is sure annoying as my ex wife.
All cables are set correctly, jumper too.
Ive heard of seeing the light but im getting tired of this.
