Comment:

-Win3.1
-CD ROM (8x Creative) installed and accessible from DOS

Problem: No Drive added to File Manager.

Question: How can I install the device?

Thanks a lot!

CD drives aren't 'detected' under DOS/Win31 - you need to find the correct DOS driver, and set the drive up in DOS.

Try Driverguide or maybe Creative.

Ideally, you would get the driver with an installer that would make the changes to your startup files. If not, you'd need:

autoexec.bat

lh c:\dos\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001

and in config.sys something *like*

DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001

that loads the CD driver, but yours may well be different, and in a different folder.

Also, some older Creative (& other) CD drives had to be run from the appropriate soundcard, rather than from IDE.
What kind of machine (386, 486 or higher)?

Not sure if this is it. Are you booting directly into 3.1? Or are you typing 'Win' at the DOS prompt? If it's the former, then perhaps your line 'win.com' in autoexec.bat is loading Windows 3.1 before getting the CD drive organised.

The drivers and the lines in autoexec.bat must be OK for DOS if the drive is accessible there.

Jeeze. I thought I'd read your post, Tobas.

Apparently, not well enough. Apologies.

That's very odd - generally, if DOS recognizes the drive, all is well with Windows. What Pete suggests seems very unlikely, but worth checking. Maybe post your DOS startup files (autoexec, config) - something might show there.

hrrstoy, if you haven't found a solution by checking previous messages, then the best thing might be for you to start your own post (in the appropriate forum, of course) but be sure to include the following info:

Operating System and version

Computer 386... 486... what?

New installation or old one gone bad?

CD drive connected how?

CD drive model & make.

- and basically anything else that you think of that might help.
