Subject: CDROM Install problems |
Comment: I have a 486DX2 66Mghz 36 megs of Ram. I was using windows 3.1 and am wanting to install my windows 98 second edition ( cd )that came with my newest computer. I formatted my hard drive, don't remeber how, I have the dos 6.2 boot discs and I have CMOS windows 3.1 ( 6 discs )I have all discs for windows 3.1. My problem is this. For the life of me I can't get the computer to read or acknowledge the CDROM. Yes it's connected properly and the jumper settings are at default. My CDROM is from AOpen CD-936E/AKU. It's interface says that it is E-IDE. I have the original install disc for the CDROM. My motherboard is a T5227251. Each time I reboot after an install I end up with a message that reads: Device driver not found MSCD000. No valid CDROM device drivers selected. After I type A:install the next screen of the install process reads at the bottom DESTINATION DIRECTORY> C:\CDROM I hit the enter key and the next screen of the install process comes up with a message at the bottom reading: DIRECTORY OF MSCDEX> C:\DOS with words flashing to use : down key to search next directory that contains MSCDEX. Even after using my down key or the page down key, nothing happens.I hit enter & my next screen gives me a choice of EXPRESS SETUP( hit enter key ) or CUSTOM SETUP ( hit the letter C key ). I hit the enter key and the next screen has a message at the top: Read installation diskette error C:\> I would like to do a complete format of my hard drive because I have tried so many options I can't remember what is where. I would greatly appreciate some direction. If in your answere I am required to reconfigure either my config.sys or my autoexec.bat files or for that matter my BIOS, PLEASE be very TEXT specific as to what needs to be typed where, please give a workable example. Once this problem is conquered, Ill be installing only the bare bones of windows 98, not the entire system. My ultimate goal is to be able to connect my newest computer with the older one. Is it possible to connect with a cable that I already have, one computer to another and load the appropriate software that way? I have spent the better part of an afternoon going through the many problems on this site that other people have had but I haven't seen any " specific " DETAILED instructions on what to do, where to edit specific text, what specific text to write and at what stage of an install is text to be edited as it pertains to this specific problem. Please, Please, HELP ! Mucho, thankso :)

Reply: (edit)It sounds as if you haven't successfully installed the CDROM drivers, most importantly by not indicating the location of MSCDEX.EXE which is vital for running your cdrom. Go into your dos directory and search for mscdex.exe (dir mscdex.exe). If you can't find it, then you need to look for that file (probably on your dos diskette). Otherwise look for a dos 6.2 bootdisk at bootdisk.com. Once you've located the file, run the cdrom installation and point to the proper directory when you get the DIRECTORY OF MSCDEX> prompt. Continue the installation and everything should work from there.

Reply: (edit)Ryan. Thanks for your quick reply. I appreciate you taking your time to respond. Just a few questions to clarify your instructions. 1.Can I search my dos directory by typing dir/p at the c:\ prompt ? 2. The bootdisk.com instruction. Should I type this at the c:\ prompt ? 3. You have indicated that I should "POINT" to the proper directory when I get the DIRECTORY OF MSCDEX> prompt. Can you please be a bit more specific. What example can you give me to show me what a point command might look like in this case. I really don't like DOS with all it's letters and slash indicators for commands. I'm affraid I am spoiled when it comes to Windows, just point and click. Lets assume that these things will correct the problem. Will I then need to go into my config.sys or my autoexec.bat files and change anything ? Will my BIOS now indicate a D drive ?.If I need to make any changes, please type out for me what those changes should be. Thanks again.
