CD-ROM drive won't work

I recently re-installed Windows 3.11 on my old 486DX2-66 but I have been unable to get my CD drive working again. When I boot up the machine I get a message similar to:
Device Driver version 4.10 Matsuchita-Kobobuki Electronics... Driver name MSCD000 1 CD-ROM drive(s) installed
Drive D: = Driver MSCD000 unit 0
but when I try to access a CD I get 'CDR101: Not ready reading drive D'. Is this a driver problem or could it be my CD-ROM drive malfunctioning? (I've had some problems with it for quite some time)

Maybe you have missed to install cdrom drivers for DOS. Put generic drivers for Dos first, and then youll be able to work with cdrom in win3.11

Be sure that there is a line in your autoexec.bat file similar to the following:
mscdex /D:MSCD000
If it is, I would check the sound card, assuming the CD is plugged in there, and if it is plugged into the correct socket, in the right direction, not loose, and that any jumpers on the sound card or CD drive are set correctly (if these things were messed with). It could be that the drive's lens is dirty, or that it's just plain busted.

Delete any Lastdrive statement in the config.sys file.

Thanks for all your help. I'm pretty sure now that it's the drive itself that's the problem and not the drivers, so I'll just have to get another one.

Ok, but if it was working before, it should work now. See above.
