Hi, please hel me, I have an old laptop who doesn't have a cd reader and am wondering if is there a possibility to make an interface or make a cable to atach a CD rom reader to the parallel port of my old pc (like nullmodem cable or something)
Thanks

Well unless you know anything about electronics and computer engineering, then no its not possible. the Parralell port 25 pin interface had an entire different format than the IDE 40 pin interface. It is possible seeing as in how you can purchase this equiptment already built. But building it would involve alot of Micro controllers, Rom, bios, and other micro computer chips, and configuration, so its not worth the effort.

Ok 180mhz your answer really broke my 20mhz heart but... maybe you can tell me how make work a ps2 keyboard in ps2 mouse port?
And remember: My system is more pathetic than yours.
And... I know of electronics (if that can help)

Micro Solutions makes parallel port CD drives.
If you have a PCMCIA slot you may be able to find a SCSI card and a SCSI CD drive.Re: Keyboard in mouse port.
Both PS/2 devices has the same pinout. The data and clock signals go to separate sections of the controller chip. So cutting some traces and jumpering should get it done.
But before you do that check the bad port for proper signals and voltage. A fuse is used to protect the port and it may have been blown especially if you hot plug devices. You would have to trace back from the port. These fuses are surface mount and look like SMD resistors.

Or you could just make your own (using an IDE CD-Rom and cable):

I got one a couple of years ago and it's probably the best solution to installing CD- based software on an older machine without a CD drive.

... which (coincidently) were & are made by the aforementioned MicroSolutions

I dont know if the ps2 keyboard in a ps2 mouse slot is possible, but it might be.
you'd have to hack your bios though, the 1/0 port drivers are in the bios usualy, or sometimes in a EpROM or EEPROM chip installed on the board. if its an EEPROM you could flash it and re-write the driver for the p2s mouse port as a keybaord port. but you'd need to know specific memory addressing etc. and if it the bios, then It can probably be hacked to change memory adresses and drivers. but this can damage your system if you dont do it properly, and it requires some programing knowlage. im not sure wich type, but basic stamp might do but dont take my word for it because that is just a guess.
do some research. if you find a way, post back here i'd be interested i knowing how you did it.My Pathetic System

My more modern laptop has one PS2 port that auto-detects either a Mouse or Keyboard, which is a bit of a bummer if you want to use both! They expect you to use a 9pin serial or in my case a USB mouse I think!
I also have a 9pin to PS2 adaptor for mouse.
Please reply with a message to let us all know we are on the right track...

Get a PS\2 splitter.
I dont know if these are universal though. You may have to check, but I know IBM Thinkpads work with them. I see them pointless if you got USB. A PS2 splitter will be good if you constantly swapping between serial and integerated.
PS: Some old PS2 ports only do keyboards, like my oldy 4/25MHz.
