OS: Dos 6.22 win3.1
CPU/Ram: 550mhz / 128
Product: HP Vecrta
Comment:

I bought a older but higher power computer to run my dos based bpies accounting program. I can't get the cd rom to work. Looks like its been replaced. Start up screen says its a Liteon LTN485S JKF1. I loaded in a all purpose driver for liteon cd roms i got from driverguide.com. On start up screen it says its reading driver and its installed. But i can't figure out how to get the cd rom to work. D: F: E: read invalid drive.

last 3 lines of the dos starup screen read:
C:\>REM c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /x
Incorrect Dos version
c:\>

config.sys reads
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.exe
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
FILES=30
STACKS=9,256

REM --- By HighSpeed CD-ROM Drive installation Program. 1/15/107 ---
LASTDRIVE=M
DEVICE = C:\HXCD-ROM\CDROM.SYS /D:MSCD000

AUTOEXEC.BAT reads
REM --- By HiSpeed CD-ROM Drive installation program. 1/15/107 ---
REM c:\dos\smartdrv.exe /x
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS

REM --- By HiSpeed CD-ROM Drive installation program. 1/5/107 ---
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.exe /X
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD000

SET TEMP=C:\DOS

Typing in MSCDEX at the c prompt returns me a "Incorrect DOS version"

Windows 3.1, bpies program loaded fine with the 3.5 disks.

How can i get this thing to read the cdrom so i can load my other programs???? THANKS

"Incorrect DOS version" means just that - you must somehow be using MSCDEX.exe from some other version of DOS - easily determined by checking the date of that file, as most 622 files are timestamped 6.22 1994
You could replace it with the correct version, or employ SETVER (since you have it loaded anyways)

Normally you would not enter MSCDEX.exe at the command prompt - it doesn't do a whole lot without the 'signature' suffix, and is best loaded from autoexec

That's not the worst set of DOS startups I've seen (but pretty close) - you have a lot of unnecessary REMs, you've failed to setup upper memory management and if you ever do get the CD drive working, it's not being cached by smartdrv. In order to do that, you'd load MSCDEX.exe prior to smartdrv

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter

OK
Orbital - I assume you are suggesting I download the MSCDEX and the QCDROM at the links you gave me.

jboy - I checked the MSCDEX date. All dates read 94 EXCEPT the MSCDEX which is dated 2-4-92.

So. where does that leave me. Should i reinstall the dos program to bring it back to its factory settings? Then install the MSCDEX and QCDROM suggested by orbital.

I've just noticed that with whatever I've done, I can no longer get into windows 3.1. It loads to the logo screen i guess you'ld call it and LOCKS up.

So should i format the hard drive and start over.

Just remember, i know enough about computers to get me into trouble, and not enough to fix my mistakes most times.

Thanks again

Well, I decided to format the drive and re-install everything. Windows 3.1 is working fine now. MSCDEX is now reading the proper date. But i still don't know how to get that cd rom drive to work. Should i just load the driver QCDROM?????

Yipee kiyay. Got it. Think my prob was i did'nt think i had that MSCDEX file so i loaded in a older version before i loaded the unversal cd rom driver. That why i got the error message. So thank you Orbital and jboy for pointing me in the right direction. Now, do you know anything about getting excessive humidity out of a house. lol. THANKS

I was just kidding. I'll need more than a dehumidifier. More like a HRV (Heat Recovery ventilator) New house. Built very tight. I should have known I'ld have to put one in. Just trying to save a penny or 2. But was running out on money and trying to cut corners.
