Comment:
Can't access Mitsumi CD ROM drive on Compaq Prolinea 575. Compaq diagnostics & BIOS recognize drive, but when try to access drive from Win 3.1 or DOS get error msg "Invalid Drive". Tried Mitsumi driver and Compaq driver with no luck. Suggestions appreciated!
Even though the Compaq BIOS & Diags see the drive, could it be proprietary? Also some Compaqs simply won't support a drive unless it's on a specific IDE port.
If it is an IDE drive, connected on the cable with the HDD, is it set for "slave"?
If IDE and all else fails, try a generic CD-Rom driver (Google "ide158.exe")
its *probably* a proprietary piece in which case you will need to find the drivers for the soundcard it plugs into as well as for the cd drive itself these drivers are specific to your hardware and you probly will not find them
i have a few of these stupid things lying around collecting dust, they suck. usually they are so slow its not even worth the time
if it is ide then you will still need to load a cd rom driver in your config.sys so in this case get the generic one
what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other
Thanks for suggestions! I've installed this same IDE Mitsumi CD drive on several other computers(including a Prolinea 5133) under DOS 6.22, WIN3.1, WIN95, and WIN98 using the latest Mitsumi driver which works in all cases. For the Prolinea 575, the cable is plugged into the secondary IDE (which is labeled "CD ROM") and the drive is jumpered as "master". The autoexec.bat and config.sys files have the correct Mitsumi driver lines inserted and load normally during startup. But the system does not see a "D:" drive. Do I need a unique driver for the Compaq 575 or what? Thanks again!

Do you get any errors after the drivers for the CD are loaded in autoexec.bat/config.sys? Also, are you just having trouble in Win 3.1 or DOS & 3.1 (assuming by your O/S description above, that's what you're running)?
