Comment: I'm trying to help a friend with a 486 running Windows 3.1 with 4 MB RAM. I haven't run 3.1 in years and have forgotten most of it! I had hoped to upgrade her to Windows 95, but posts here lead me to think this is impractible given the small amount of RAM. I bought MS Works 4.5 off eBay. Can I install it successfully on 3.1 (will it run?) Do you have any advice re installation? Also, how do I get to DOS from 3.1? Thanks for any and all help!

Reply: (edit) I'm sorry, but it's impossible running Ms Works 4.5 in windows 3.1, because it's a full 32-bit application, and it won't work even thought the win32's system is installed. To go to DOS from Windows 3.1, choose "Window --> Control Panel --> MS-DOS"

Reply: (edit)It wont run on win31, but not because it's 32bit (it's got some 16bit code in it too)..It's because it's dependant on the explorer interface, (the common controls)..this is why it wont run on earlier fersions of NT either (p.s., not a spelling mistake..seems the letter after u doesn't work on this keyboard!) I suspect it's the same with works 4.0,as i think it mentioned it wouldnt run on NT at all (NT 4.0 wasn't yet out when works 4 came out....) To get to DOS, you just shut down windows..then youre automatically at the dos prompt..theres no setting in control panels for Dos, but you can open up a dos prompt window in 31 by just clicking the MsDos prompt icon in program manager.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for all the input from everyone, even though it was "bad news" -- guess I'll see if I can get more memory for her. Can anyone tell me how to find out what kind of memory she needs -- and if it is still available? Thanks again, this is a great board!

Reply: (edit)Yeah, MSWorks 4.0 for Windows 95 runs great on NT 3.51. I have the 4.0 to 4.5 patch, but I never tried that in NT 3.51...

Reply: (edit)Well, i wasn't sure about 4.0 anyways..i do know my version of 4.5 definately wouldn't install on nt351 at all, although it probably would've run great ...there may be more than one version too, i don't know..mine specifically says on the case "will not run on NT' .usually the 'made for windows 95' seal means it should install on nt351..at least that's supposed to be the case..however in my earlier post i should have said 'it won't install' instead of 'it won't run' as i should well know better...
