Hi!
I have the Arachne software downloaded on my Windows 3.1 OS. I've been told by a computer 'tech' guy that I can't get e-mail no matter what software program I use. He said that the 'latest' version I can get e-mail with (using a modem) is Windows 3.11. Is that true?
I bought a PC card modem through e-bay, but don't know if the 'drivers' come with it as I haven't received the modem yet. Would the Arachne program have built-in modem drivers for connecting a modem to my laptop, or is that a Windows driver? Thanks.

Well the Tech guy is just wrong. If you get all the normal information that you need for email setup, from your service provider and fill it in properly, you will be able to download email.
SMTP server
POP3 server
username
password
etc.

Yeah the Tech guy does'nt know scwat.
You also need Primary and Secondary DNS settings and of course the number to dail the ISP.
These probably can be gotten from the ISP website help section.

The build in email client from Arachne is probably the best solution for old computers.
Arachne is a DOS program that even works on a XT computer. For email with Windows the minimal system for me (until now) was a 386 with 2 Mb and Windows 3.1. I used Trumpet Winsock 2.0b and Pegasus Mail 2.53.
Earlier versions of Pegasus seem to work with Windows standard mode (286 computer) but I haven't tried yet.Keep in mind that you must have a 16550 UART com-port if you have a modem > 9600 baud.
If thats the case its better to use Windows 3.11, because 3.1 must be upgraded with a file called: CYBERCOM.ZIP.The so called technician doesn't know what he's talking about...

You need a conventional hardware modem for Arachne, not a cr*ppy Winmodem. You don't need a fast UART (especially for email), but your connection might be more successful if you throttle back the connection rate. With a bit of work, you can run QEMM, Arachne and Insight (the mail program) and several utilities off a single bootable floppy. Insight isn't too good if you have a high level of mail, but you can always read it outside Arachne with ViewHTML or a text editor. While you can use Arachne from Windows, you're better off being in DOS. Hop over to http://chat.arachne.cz for more tips -- just ask!

Arachne has ALL you need for internet and email it is complete.yes you cannot use a win modem with it or anything for DOS.get DRDOS 7.3 free download it hsa everything needed for all your problems with Arachne or win 3.1 and it has a built-in dual boot loader if you need dual boot someday.you can install any version of windows and then boot DRDOS from a floppy then go to c:\drdos and type LOADER and it will be dual boot,no problems,i've used DRDOS many years with NO problems.
also Eudora lite 16bit will solve your email problems in win 3.1,but nothing wrong with Arachne email either
