I want to build a computer dedicated to Win 3.11 and DOS 6.22. I want modern computing power to run the old games. Gates, in his rush to obsolete his product, obsoleted a third of my library.
I have a computer with two drives, one with 95 and the other with 98se. When I created the 95 hd, I had to dummy down my system. My video card and sound card, for example, had no drivers for 95.
Does anyone know the best board, vid card, sound card, CPU etc. that will work with 3.11 and 6.22?
Thanks.

you are making it difficult to ask my question.

622 will work on any x86 processor and FAT16 partition. DOS7.1 (Win9x DOS) supports FAT32 and also supports more than 64Mb of RAM.

Older DOS games wouldn't require anything special for VGA, although later games could use high res (Blood, Duke3D, DooM source ports).

Soundcard would typically need to use the 'normal' IRQs - any pre plug'n'play, SB compatible would work for sure, likely some PnP ones too, depending.

For high res in Win31, plenty of cards made around 95 or 96 (or so) would have had Win3xx drivers.

Currently running a dual boot 622/95 system on 200MHz ('97) machine, nary a problem. Matrox video, Crystal Audio. Nothing fancy, but beats the hell out of my old 486.

To run basic DOS games & Win31, really the only thing you'd need to be sure of is a supported soundcard - for higher video resolution, then you'd need a vidcard with Win31 drivers

Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed.

MSDOS or equivelent will install on most PC's even AMD64's and drivers may not be needed see:

W3.x is more tricky but have found that older ex office machines such as the IBM PC300PL and Compaq Deskpro 2000/4000 with Pemtium1 MMX CPU's and 64MB Memory ideal as drivers are still listed.

Running older software on new PC's is overkill, considering in the UK £30 will get an ex office P1 MMX PC and 17" Monitor

Any X86 CPU should be fine. When I was looking (about 2 years ago) the best video card that I could find Windows 3.1 drivers for was a ATI XPert 98 (8mb). For network card I had some of my favorite NIC's the 3Com 3C905 10/100 cards. These have been around a long time and DOS drivers are available. It works great surfing the Web on my DSL connection. There are some creative Labs SoundBlaster PCI cards that do have Windows 3.1 drivers.
