Where can I get boot disk files for windows 3.11? I try using a dos boot disk, and running windows from dos, but it says to use a boot disk compatible with Windows 3.11.

All Windows 3.x versions of Windows require DOS 6.22 or earlier. You cannot use DOS 7 and up which are a part of Windows95/98
A DOS 6.22 boot disk is available at
www.bootdisk.comand DOS 5 is available at
http://members.theglobe.com/emoclews/dos5.htmlI saw a post for DOS 6.22 at:
http://users3.50megs.com/emoclews/dos622.html

People ask anyone who knows anything about computers. There is no such thing as a Windows 3.11 boot disk. It is not an operating system. Do you mean you are trying to boot the computer with a dos boot disk & install Windows 3.11. Dos has to be installed (or just the boot files from dos) to the hard drive before you can install Windows 3.11. I run Windows 3.11 & dos 6.2 with no problems.

Preston,
Quit posting links to dos OS. Both of these people left there e-mail address. Why didn't you send them the links through e-mail. This site will not be here long because of people like you. Wise up, you are helping but hurting everyone.

You need more than just the 3 MS-DOS system files to correctly install Windows 3.1 For High Memory support you need HIMEM.SYS & EMM386.exe For correct formating of future floppy disks you need FORMAT.COM SYS.COM and LABEL.COM For CD-ROM Support MSCDEX.exe
In fact it is best to install MS-DOS in full!

I have Windows 3.11 installed on my machine. Because of a small hard drive I only installed the dos boot files from a boot disk. Himem.sys I got a copy off of my friends pc & emm386 & installed on my hard drive. Windows runs perfectly. Yes it is better to install all of dos, but if you have a small hard drive, only installing the files you really need is better. I dont have a cdrom so I dont need the extra files for that.

Anderson, you didn't leave your e-mail address so I'll reply to your statement here. Myself and others have posted links here for various downloads, including DOS, without problems for quite some time. If it is a problem, I'm sure the moderator will let me know. I always use my e-mail address when I post, unlike you.

Yeh Preston,
Tell that to Freelinks 2001. They want do anything to you they will just shut the download site down.

I never posted a link for Freelinks 2001. I only use links that I have permission for. Links come and go. Don't expect one to be permanent. Microsoft closes one link, and another pops up somewhere else. It's how it has to be done today.

I used to provide a 'Download Site' for DOS & Windows, So I think that I have a right to make a comment here. What differance does it make sending a link to a unknown poster to printing it here? If I was looking for sites to close down, I would welcome an e-mail with links in it! At the end of the day no one forces people to put up a download site! I no longer do so, nor will I provide links via my PowerLoad Resource Pages to protect that site. Untill Microsoft release older versions of thier software as FreeWare or on a (GNU) GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE (which I doubt they will do) this problem will stay with us.

Allright, people need to make up there minds here. I know it was not you two, Mick C. & Preston but I have read many a post about not posting the links to these sites to try to preserve them so I have been trying to do this also. I guess it really does not make a difference the way you put it though (Mick C.) I have never thought of it that way.
