The computer i have came with a CD-ROM or so it says on the Packard Bell sticker label on the top of the PC, but i had to format the hard drive and i loaded DOS 6.22 on it and the i bought a brand new unopend version of Windows 3.1 and installed it on the computer. Well, Windows doesn't recognize it and the BIOS doesn't either. the BIOS is Phoenix and i can't find any updates on it at all. What do i do?

Your CDROM drive is probably connected to your sound card. You need the drivers for the correct model soundcard and CD Drive. You will have to look inside.

This is very common to find the cd-rom connected to a Crystal sound card on old Packard-Bells.
Likely the problem as Fred states.

Tell you what:
Do an internet search for OAKCDROM.SYS, then copy it to the DOS directory. Modify your config.sys file to say:
DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:CD001
Then your autoexec.bat file to say:
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:CD001 /L:D
Substitute C:\DOS for your DOS directory, if it is different (most computers use C:\DOS).
After you're done modifying, (be sure to save changes), reboot your computer and that should do it.
(If you have the CD-ROM attached to the sound card, like SkipCox and Fred said, OAKCDROM.SYS will not load the CD-ROM driver).
Win3Wiz

OK, I have looked in the computer and the cd-rom is connected to the soundcard...the sound card is a forte 16, but no where on the cd-rom does it have the brand name. what do i do?
