Anyway just to update you ,tried to fit CD-Rom unsuccessfully now switch on with Diag REV 105 going through main component check gets to floppy drive--NOT PRESENT then later SYSTEM CONFIGURATION ERROR took floppy drive cable out and still same messages system frozen--no bypassF8,NO F5,no nothing.Earlier advice suggested bios chip was ok as self diag prog launches. Any advice as to how and where the command SYSTEM CONFIGURATION ERROR comes from is this the file eprommed into the chip? Precise and simple instructions ,please Dave the snake

The system configuration error comes from the mismatch from the CMOS setting and the detected hardware. Early BIOS's did not autoconfigure. It told you that there was a problem.
f5 and f8 only becomes active when DOS gets loaded.
