Do you have a lot of files on your Win3.1 machine? Are there 10s of megabytes, or 100s of megabytes? Because it wouldn't be that difficult to transfer the files by floppy if it is just 10s of megabytes. As long as both computers are running, just tranfer them over time. Everytime you move 5 full floppies from the Win3.1 machine to the Win98 machine, your moving about 7 megabytes of files. Just do that once every day or so for a couple of weeks and all your files will be moved. However, the best way to do it is to set up some kind of wired connection between the two computers and just send the files across the wires. You asked about USB, but your old Win3.1 computer doesn't have USB ports, does it? If you had network cards (Ethernet) in both machines, then there are several kinds of software that you could set up to transfer files between the two. It is possible, if you find the software, to have the Win3.1 machine showup in the Win98 Network Neighborhood, where you can just drag and drop the files from one machine to the other. It is also possible to connect the two computers together through the serial ports and transfer files that way. But, all of these methods of wire transfer will require finding the old drivers and software needed and then learning how to set them up and use them. There aren't any "Plug and Play" methods to connect a Win3.1 machine to a Win98 machine.

Here's a unique way (though I've never tried it ) which doesn't use floppies, USB, null-modem cables or network cards (unless you count standard modems as network cards...

Install the hard drive, if it is standard IDE, into an external USB Caddy

I would definitely backup those files if all possible. You can probably pick up a old zip drive & disk's really cheap. They can transfer up to 100mb. A serial external are next to nothing anymore.

Also if you manage to network your old 3.1 to 98, which is quite easy with a bit of reading you may be able to find a generic printer driver for a newer printer and share it with your 3.1 box.

My recommendation would be the Zip 100 drive. These disks and drives are dirt cheap now, but remain very functional and useful. I use them to connect my 486, W95, and ME machines, when I need to transfer files, programs, backup etc. If you fill them up, just buy and external or burn the info to CD and reuse the zip disk.
