I'm having problems trying to install wfw3.1 on a 486/66 . I have 3.1 on my 98 box backed up(the install set) and the floppy drive is out in the 486. I have tried 4 floppy drives from other old machines i have to no avail. Since ths will be MY first install of 3.1, i was hoping someone could tell me what-if any problems i might face. My intended path is to install the 80mb 486 drive as a second HD in another/newer system and install there, then reinstall the HD. Will i have any problems using this route? fyi, the 486 has 2 80mbers, so feisably i can poss put install files in the second HD to be used on the first. the machine is ment as a browser/ webmail client for a elderly couple in the area incase you are wondering. Thank you for any help.

Yip if you install win3.1 onto a slave then remove the slave and install that slave as C: drive in another machine Win 3.x(&Win9.x for that matter) will get screwed up.
All the paths will point to D: and not c:.

Would be ok if you left it as the secondary drive though.

Hi Mike,
put the harddrive you want to use in a newer machine and install dos on it then just copy the backup disks to a folder on that harddrive. put it back into the machine you want to use it on and it should boot to a command prompt. then simply change to the folder with your install disks and run setup from within that folder. should get you up and running.

James is right.

Mike just a thought- for four floppy drives not to work it would appear the Fdd contoller is faulty, disabled(bios or jumpers) or cables connected incorrectly.

Would be nice if your freinds could save data to a floppy. A new skill as it were.

Hope it goes well.
