Ok, thanks for the feedback in the previous post. How about comparing Netscape 4.08 to Archane the dos browser. How good is it and is it better than NS 4.08

thanks

It's a bit like comparing apples and oranges..arachne has very much a dos personality..it isn't really multitasking (although that's mostly due to dos's native singletasking)..arachne takes up the whole screen, like any dos program..doen't do javascript or java, is about half as fast as netscape 408 ..but it's totally cool, nonetheless..it just has a lot of limitations that would never be accepted in a windows browser.
On the other hand, it renders the newer pages quite well compared to some older browsers like IE3 or even IE4..after all it's pretty recently been updated and theres a custom updated version that was just coded in (i think) 2003.
I wouldnt ever consider using it over Netscape 4.08 on any machine with Windows installed, but on a dos only machine, its really the only choice..browsers like Lynx and the rest (of which theres barely a handful as it is) fall so far behind it they don't really rate...
Unfortunately, for some reason my cable ISP will no longer let Arachne connect..i'm at a loss as to why , as older windows browsers are accepted, ( i even had a 16 MH 386 with Netscape 0.9 which got online fine every time..) except that it may be due to it being in Dos only...it worked fine for a year for me, and then suddenly one day it stopped...

I agree with Dominicus, Arachne, especially the latest GPL 1.73 version (available from my site), is a very nice Dos browser, but it has its limitations. On the other hand, Netscape 4.08 is getting less and less useful as well, so many pages won't display right in it or will just freeze it! The choice of browsers in Win 3.1 is restrained, and they all show their age nowadays. I think an older system still does good win IE3 SP1 or Opera 3.62, but if you are using 3.1 on a newer system you should definitely use IE 5.01. It won't be any faster, but will render more sites the way they are supposed to be viewed. Otherwise, you can experiment with the fantastic array of browsers that are available at browsers evolt. If you can think of a browser, they have it! I think there are still some good years left in the old Windows 3.1 however, but users will have to live with some limitations. Can't stop progress lol!

HTH.

Lightspeed.
